Saturday the 5th November was the final round for the Colonel’s Cup and Metropole Cup series, ending a 10-round Stableford series hotly contested over the summer months on the links. Judging by the participation this year these cups still generate much enthusiasm amongst the Saturday regulars, with as many as 90 entries on any given Saturday.
In the Colonel’s Cup the race was quite tight. Steve Smith held a slim margin over Dave Pooley and Andy Bunt (85, 84 and 83 points respectively) and this formed one of the last round 3-balls on Saturday. Also in the mix were Sam Jarvis, Richard Hawken and John Rowe on 82, 81 and 81 series points. In the Metropole the leader was Danny Hoare on 91 points and he was mathematically unbeatable. Nonetheless the challenge for runner up was still in the balance and Nigel Thomas and Sam Jarvis were ready for the battle.
In the end Steve Smith proved a worthy winner coming in with a very impressive 39 pts and a clear series winner over Andy Bunt, who narrowly pipped Dave Pooley with a better sixth score in the series. Danny Hoare won the Metropole and Nigel Thomas was second. Third place was snatched by Paul Warren who rallied with an astonishing 42 points, winning the day by 8 points over the nearest Division II player. It was an exciting final round for both of these prestigious club cups.
