St. Enodoc Golf Club - Bowl Team go down in a thriller

Bowl Team go down in a thriller

Cape Cornwall our opponents in the 1st round of this winters Cornwall Bowl competition were losing semi-finalist's last year and so this match was never going to be easy. Played yesterday at sunny, but breezy, Newquay GC the St Enodoc team under the Captaincy of Charles Rayment had to be prised from the Club TV where Japan were giving a rugby lesson to Scotland. Cape Cormwall were sporting and very friendly opponents with each match played in the manner expected - sadly this is not always the case with Cornwall Bowl ties.

The result of the match turned on the last match on the course - Kevin Birkett and Ian Day. Three down after 15 holes they won the par 3 16th thanks to an excellent Birkett tee shot. The 17th was against the strong breeze and both pairs were short in three shots, both pairs on in 4, then the Cape Cornwall pair somehow managed to four putt the hole from about 8 feet. Thus 1 down and 1 to play. Our brave boys were just short in 2 and the Cape Cornwall pair right of the green pin high in the semi rough. A super Birkett chip left about a 5 foot putt for par. The Cape Cornwall player then duffed a chip about 4 feet leaving the ball on the fringe about 10 feet from the pin. With the pressure on they then slotted the putt from off the green for a par - a halved hole and the match.

Jeff Buckley & Ken Perring lost 2 down

Peter Liddicoat & Nigel Goodman won 5 & 4

Kevin Birkett & Ian Day lost by one hole
