The Junior Academy team eased their way into the semi final stage of the Bolitho Shield to be held at Newquay on 2nd September. Playing at Carlyon Bay against China Fleet on August 19th it was always going to be a close and tense contest. The format changes slightly at this quarter final stage. The competition is a matchplay competition played off handicap and usually teams of six tee off in handicap order. At the quarter final stage 7 players tee off in reverse order with the 7th man counting for a three quarter point in the event of a tied match.
Nick Hirst teed off as 7th man playing against Joe Yeoman. Rhiannon Rich teed off in the second match playing against Brendan O'Gorman. Unfortunately for Brendon, Rhiannon was 'firing' on all cylinders and she duly closed her match out winning 9&8. Shannon Ashcroft, making her team debut, won her match against Aimie Wellington 3&2. Dan Pooley, playing against Ross Wellington, being fresh from his recent cruise and one would assume lacking in practice, won his match comfortably 7&6. Joe Combellack, bristling with confidence after his recent exploits in the Mail on Sunday team, won his game against Louis Wellington 6&4.
Jake Sanders gave a good account of himself but lost his match against County player Jack Screech 3&2. Unfortunately Sam Jarvis, also fresh from his exploits as part of the Mail on Sunday team, played against the very talented Sam Church, again a County player and lost 5&4. Nick's match moved onto the 18th all square. Both players missed the green with their tee shots but chipped reasonably well leaving a long putt for Joe and a longer chip for Nick. It was Nick to play first and he duly holed. Joe's attempt unfortunately lipped out leaving Nick victorious.
