The tabloid press in reporting the Seniors’ home victory over Bude on Monday, 7th September, would probably use such sensational superlatives as ‘stonking,’ ‘thumping’ or ‘crushing.’ In the much more genteel world of the Old Saints, ‘satisfying,’ ‘comfortable,’ or ‘healthy’ will suffice to describe the 7 – 1 win.
On a fine, late-summer day, with the course at its immaculate best, the margin of victory may have came as something of a surprise. Perhaps the visitors were overwhelmed by the panoramic beauty surrounding them, for not one managed to stay on the green on the 15th wine hole. However, it was much more likely that our old boys were motivated and positively inspired by the breaking news that one of their number had just won a 3rd place for his broad beans in the St Teath Flower and Vegetable Show ! Whatever the source, the Seniors were delighted to win the coveted Commings Putter trophy. There is clearly a need for more success with potatoes, lettuce or sprouts before away matches !

Old Hickory’s trivia:
This simple formula, Sd=SbH , permits the calculation of the speed of a player’s downswing, so important to ambitious golfers. Multiply the speed of his backswing by his handicap. Example: backswing 40 mph, handicap 15, downswing 600 mph !!
