On Friday April 12th the annual meeting of the Senior and Junior sections of the club combined in competitions held over both courses. The day began in rather blustery and chill conditions but later brightened to be a fine spring day. There were some excellent performances by both Senior and Junior competitors on the Church course, but it was Rhiannon Rich and her partner Richard Parsons who won the event with a remarkable 46 points. They scored 28 of these on the back nine holes, with Rhiannon’s birdies on holes 11 and 18 being the highlights. Although not in the prizes, mention should be made of Junior Captain Jake Sanders birdie on the Church course 12th; according to his partner Club Vice-Captain David Elliott this was made possible by a wind assisted drive of 329 yards !
Those on the Holywell played in a “Pinehurst Greensome Stableford”, which had many of the Senior members scratching their heads. The Juniors supplied a look of bemused indifference, but John Bower had helpfully provided written instructions, so there was a lengthy tutorial on the 1st tee to ensure universal compliance.
Guest Senior Sean Beare and partner Ross Beare won with score of 42 points.
Senior’s Captain Peter Commings spoke eloquently about promoting the Junior section and emphasized the work done by Kenton Williams in organising the coaching programme held at the club, and the subsequent support given by David Elliott and John Bower. The contribution of Mark Arrowsmith in giving invaluable expertise was also highlighted. The matches were played in good spirit and the day reflected the very best of the fellowship of St Enodoc Golf Club.
