St. Enodoc Golf Club - A Surprise Visitor at St Enodoc

A Surprise Visitor at St Enodoc

There was a major surprise visitor to St Enodoc on Saturday 4th July when unannounced 5 times Open Champion Peter Thomson firstly visited the Pro Shop and then was seen spectating along with his family on the 18th. Engaged in conversation afterwards by John Radford it suddenly dawned on John who it was he was talking to and promptly introduced him to me and being a long time student of the game I was really quite overcome. Peter is President of the James Braid Society hence his interest in the course but had never played here but was very impressed and felt that it should be in the World Top 50 rather than Top 100! Sadly they did not have time to come into the Clubhouse as his party were literally on their way to play Braid's Brora before heading to St Andrews for the Open.

Like Braid himself Peter holds the great distinction of having won the Open on no less than five occasions in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958 and 1965. It was always felt that his final win at Royal Birkdale aged 36 was the most significant by which time the American pros were beginning to come to play in in some significant numbers and there he beat the 3 top players at that time in the World - Palmer, Nicklaus and Player. In total the Australian known as the "Melbourne Tiger" won some 57 Tour events and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988. As well as having a successful career as a commentator he has had a thriving golf course design business. I feel greatly privileged to have met one of the great World icons of golf, it really made my day!
