Last winter all the Frank Wills matches seemed to be played in a freezing cold/wet gale. Today - Sunday October 12th, at nicely presented Trethorne GC, conditions were relatively benign for this 1st round tie against near neighbours Bowood GC. In the presence of the Club Captain & Vice-Captain and a good number of most welcome supporters Bob Cruse\'s team overcame some stiff resistance from Bowood to ease into the second round, when they will meet our closest neighbours - \"Point at Polzeath\" and who overcame Mullion.
The team showed some changes from that which lost in the semi-final last winter; Bob Cruse introducing two new pairings: Paul Dingle and Mike Masters together with John Paul and Dave Flew. Current Perranporth Winter Foursomes Champions John Pease and Kevin Brenton lead the way for St Enodoc against Cornwall County Seniors Team stalwart Dave Goodman and Jon Rowe. 1 down after 14 holes Brenton and Pease then turned up the heat and showed their experience to win three consecutive holes to close out their match 2 & 1. This point was swiftly followed by another when Dingle & Masters easily beat Bradley & Connolly 4 & 3. However behind them the battle raged for the vital 3rd point. Paul & Flew came up against an on form pair to lose 5 & 4. However there was reliability and experience at the back and despite some nervy moments, including two vital eight foot putts from Rich Lawrence on the 15th and 16th holes, Hawken and Lawrence delivered their customary point for the team on the 18th green. Not knowing that the tie was decided Keith Hawke and Sam Jarvis played on and halved their match.
Match result: St Enodoc 3.5 points Bowood 1.5 points
