Our first round match against last year`s runners up “Cape Cornwall” was played at Perranporth on a bright and very blowy day, as usual we arrived early to take advantage of a good bacon butty to get us going, Nick Williams provided  a huge bag of balls to enable the team to get well and truly loosened up on the driving range, a quick chip and putt, a few words of encouragement and we were off.

First out Kev Brenton and John Arnold, giving 3 shots, our boys cruised to a 6-5 win, they were followed by Neil Bradley and John Paul, giving 6 shots to two very useful 10 & 11 handicaps resulting in a 3 & 2 loss.

Next out was Rich Lawrence and Russ Combellack who were also giving 3 shots, our boys were never in trouble running out a 3 & 2 win.

Stuart Fleet and Paul Clemens, the new boys on the block, giving 2 shots had a real battle on their hands, they were 1 up playing the 18th and a great putt from the opposition to make a par left us going down the 19th, the opposition again made an impossible up and down from the wide right hand side of fairway, that Joe Cruse would have been proud of,  to make a par and win the game 1 up.

Now the pressure was really on, last pair out Bob Cruse and Ade Halling giving1 shot were again all square going down 18, both teams on the green in 2 with the opposition 1mtr from the pin, Bob made a great putt from distance to leave Ade with a tap in for par, Cape Cornwall missed the putt that would have won them the match for them, off to the 19th (again).  Bob was in the bunker playing our 3rd shot whilst Cape Cornwall were at the back of the green for 3, Bob played out nicely but leaving Ade a long putt, the opposition left there putt short, Ade to go next, again shorter than Bob would have liked, Cape Cornwall rolled there put up to 0.3m, Bob had to make the putt to keep us in the match which he duly did, Cape Cornwall putting for the match under severe pressure - missed!! Were still in it, off we go up the 20th ( my hair is now even whiter than it was before we started, I've developed a twitch and an itch, my ticker's going like the clappers and this is only the first round!!!) I needn't have worried Bob and Ade played this hole with style, final result 3 -2 in our favour.

Big thanks to Nick Wiilliams, our 2 caddies Mike Lovett and Paul Warren, the hardy supporters and finally to Perranporth golf club who looked after us with good food and an odd beer.

Next round TBA.

Geoff Jones Very proud team Captain.
