Tom Watson Wedge

Published: 4th July 2017

The Tom Watson Wedge was contested on Saturday.  Presented to St Enodoc by Tom Watson himself the team event is fiercely fought.  Each player in the 4 man team can choose to play from the Blue tee or the yellow tees.  If a gross par or better is scored from the blue tees the player gets an extra point and from the yellow tees the player gets an extra point if a gross birdie is achieved.  On the blue tees however there is an extra risk because if over par no score counts at all.

The scoring is great if you are playing well and picking up extra points but demoralising if you are having an off day!  The cards have also proved hard to check after the competition!

In first place and defending their title from last year Rob Cook, Joe Combellack, John Paul and Nigel Buse scored 101 points.   The team, back together after last year’s success bettered their previous score of 96 to win the Tom Watson Wedge for 2017.

Second place went to Josh Greenaway, Mike Masters, Kevin Brenton and Tuck Clagett with 100 points.  They were the leading team until the 15th but were denied victory over the last 3 holes.  Martin Biddle, Lewis Bradley, Neil Bradley and Rod Frost finished in third place with 99 points, Martin, who had placed 4th last year in a different team may have found his team now!  In 4th place this year Richard Hawken, Neal Jolley, Kevin Preater and Tony Rounsevell had 89 points and squeezed ahead on countback of the 5th place team.  Steve Buse, Andy Bunt, Kevin Francis and Mike Buse also had 89 points - one point better than the same team scored last year to take second place, this year they had to settle for 5th.
