The Old Saints struggle in the greenside rough at St Mellion

Published: 11th April 2017

On a bright and breezy day which promised to be warm and fine the Seniors team arrived at St Mellion to find it cloudy and chilly with a strong variable wind blowing seemingly from all directions.

The Nicklaus Course is always a daunting challenge as so it turned out yet again. The captain of the day Mike Maberly led the way partnered with Des Kelly but found the going very tough as David Dow the ‘Fossils’ captain, in very good form, simply showed how the course should be played with three birdies in the opening nine! Much was said about the second cut rough around the greens which presented a challenge to our team as chipping out of two the three inches of lush grass is not something we get much experience of at home.

Our brightest stars were Steve Smith and Richard Parsons who came home very comfortable winners in the third match to show the rest of us just how easy the course was if played correctly. They have been asked to bottle whatever it is they take and to let all seniors share it.

The overall match was lost 2 ½ to 5½.

The nearest the pin was won by a relative newcomer to the team Nigel Coulson-Stevens with a very delicate shot of 120 yards down hill to a few feet of the pin. Well done Nigel!

Overall results:

Mike Maberly and Des Kelly lost 5 and 4
Graham Keeble and Nigel Thomas lost 5 and 4
Richard Parsons and Steve Smith won 6 and 5
Andy Farrant and Nigel Olesen match Halved
Derek Rushton and Garry Cooper lost 5 and 4
Keith Hawke and John Westlake lost 5 and 4
Paul Godfrey and Stuart Sandercock won 3 and
Nigel Coulson-Stevens and Geoff Matthews lost 4 and 3
