The Great Escape !

Published: 26th February 2017

St Enodoc men, or at least those (fool) hardy enough to go out in a gale, played yesterday in a green-somes competition. Amongst those participating were a retired agronomist from the Midlands and his partner a retired Engineer from Surrey. Having struggled around seventeen holes and standing on the 18th tee the pair held a two point advantage over their opponents, and thus were feeling somewhat confident about taking the money – the all important £1.

Now the omni-present Niblick happened to be close by at this time and witnessed what was to be an interesting up and down. Approaching the 18th green the agronomist (allegedly also related to a renowned chart topping lady piano player of the same name) had a pitch shot of about 30yds left to a back pin. Now he, the agronomist, is well known as a wizard with the wedges but on this occasion his skill momentarily deserted him and the ball shot off about three inches from the ground. Travelling at some considerable speed the ball scorched across the green over the mound at the back and ended up on the artificial surface a few feet from the practice putting green. “Out of bounds!” gleefully claimed their opponents; a check of the local rules could not confirm this to be so, thus professional advice from Mr Arrowsmith was sought. He in turn advised that the ball was indeed in play and furthermore relief from the artificial surface was permissible. A drop was duly taken on the practice putting green immediately in line with the Pro Shop door leaving the Chartered Engineer a shot directly over the Club House to the green. Despite the risks involved, not to mention a potential insurance claim for damage to the Club House, our Engineer now managed to flip the ball up and over the Pro Shop and onto the green. Two putts later and the £1 was secured.
