With an exceptional display of matchplay golf from Steve Chapman who won his afternoon singles match 7 & 5 in a round which included six birdies St Enodoc CTC Team this afternoon cruised to a big win over St Mellion in this 1st round tie of the 2016/17 Cornwall Team Championship.

Watched by the Club Captain, Ladies' Captain, Head Pro and supporting Members this match was played in very good weather and in good spirit. One of the Members watching was heard to remark that the matches were running late and that they might not finish before dark, after some prompting and checking it was found that said Member had failed to put his watch back an hour and was still on BST !

In the morning foursomes the match was evenly poised with two wins for St Enodoc, one loss and one halved match to leave the lunchtime score St Enodoc 2.5 St Mellion 1.5. Additionally St Mellion won the 9th man match.

The afternoon singles started off slowly with many of the matches very even after the first few holes. Then came Steve Chapman's birdie fest and who walking off the 11th green, and to the stunned surprise of those watching, was no less than six up.

Next to win was Team Captain Joe Cruse with a 4 & 3 victory, followed by Simon Welch with a 5 & 4 win. Mike Masters all square after eight holes then went eagle, birdie, birdie on holes 9,10 and 11 to gain control of his match running out with a 4 & 2 win. Joe Combellack followed with a 3 & 2 win. With match over as a contest at this point Kris Godfey and his opponent agreed a half. But Steve Buse carried on in a tight match and with his opponent losing his ball up the 18th won 2 up. Award for fight back of the day must go, however, to Team Manager Jack Irwin. Jack was not at his best over the opening holes and found himself three down. Slowly he got back into the match and pulled it back to all square on the 18th tee. Both players were on the green in two; Jack 40 feet away and his opponent 10 feet from the hole. To the delight of all watching, including some sporting St Mellion players, Jack drained an enormous birdie putt which his opponent could not match to win 1 up !
