Today, at cold and breezy Newquay GC and on the the sixtieth anniversary of the commencement of the CTC, St Enodoc won the 2012/2013 Cornish Team Championship beating West Cornwall by the comprehensive margin of 9.25 points to 3.5 points.

By happy coincidence the President of the CGU, Malcolm Jones, is a St Enodoc Member and the Vice-President of the CGU, David Inch a Member of West Cornwall; both were present in their official capacities and no doubt to cheer on their respective sides. The match was, once again, well supported by many hardy St Enodoc Members; one of whom was so keen not to miss the final that he turned up at Newquay one week early !

The undoubted highlight of the morning foursomes was a big comeback by Martin Biddle and Rob Davies. At one point 5 holes down they clawed their way back into contention to run out easy winners 3 & 1. Kristian Godfrey and Mark Justice, playing last won an important half point courtesy of a long putt from Kristian on the 18th. With Simon Welch making an important up and down on the last, St Enodoc also won the 9th man match and went into lunch 3.25 points to 1.5 points up.

Morning Foursomes Results

  • Joe Cruse & Jack Irwin beat Matt Richards & Alex Classon 3 & 1
  • Steve Chapman & Mike Weaver lost to Luke Stevens & Dean Tilley 5 & 3
  • Kristian Godfrey & Mark Justice halved with Jon Coleman & Harry Hall
  • Rob Davies & Martin Biddle beat John Clatworthy & Phil Weaver 3 & 1
  • Simon Welch beat Pete Darlington 1 up

As always in these matches the afternoon games are always tight over the front nine and so it was this afternoon. Slowly however St Enodoc nerves were calmed as the team nudged it’s way in front in several matches. Joe Cruse in the lead match against fellow County player Matt Richards found himself 3 down at one point but with some fine play pulled himself back into it to claim the first point of the afternoon. No doubt spurred by the morning loss Mike Weaver was never headed in his match against Jon Coleman and ran out an easy winner to claim point number two. Captain Steve Chapman playing against 15 year old England Boys International Harry Hall soon found himself 3 down; but he too fought back and with a fine birdie on 16 was all square. Neither player found 17 easy and Hall’s bogey 5 was good enough to take the hole. This advantage he held and with it West Cornwall’s only win of the afternoon. Jack Irwin (21st Birthday tomorrow) had a long fight against Alex Classon but had good wins on the 17th and 18th to prevail for another point. Some classy golf from both Rob Davies and Mark Justice saw them win 4 & 2 and 3 & 2 respectively. These points were good enough to ensure a second win CTC in three years and the remaining matches on the course were deemed to be halved.

Afternoon Singles Results

  • Joe Cruse beat Matt Richards 2 up
  • Mike Weaver beat Jon Coleman 5 & 4
  • Steve Chapman lost to Harry Hall 1 hole
  • Jack Irwin beat Alex Classon 1 up
  • Rob Davies beat Dean Tulley 4 & 2
  • Mark Justice beat Rob Tempest 3 & 2
  • Kristian Godfrey halved with Luke Stevens
  • Steve Buse halved with Phil Weaver

The win also completes the CTC and Frank Wills double for the season along with the Ladies winning the Gammon Trophy. Well done and congratulations to all three teams!

The webmaster would also like to thank Antony Nash for his continuous stream of Twitter messages on the state of the match during the afternoon.
