Perfect weather and the St Enodoc course in great shape greeted the competitors for five days of inter-County golf at the South Western Counties Golf Association 2016 Championships. Day 1 saw Cornwall play nearest and dearest rivals Devon and with Singles wins for Joe Cruse, debutant Jared Mortimore, Josh Greenaway and Ryan Curtis and with Conor Wilson taking a half, Cornwall led 4 ½ to 3 ½ at lunch.

The afternoon Foursomes for which a win earned 1½ points and a match halved ¾ of a point. Joe Cruse and Matt Richards were 5 up at the turn and looked as if they were on auto pilot (Cruise control?) but it was not to be and in the end they only squeaked home 1 up. Conor Wilson and Chris Fleming had another close encounter which went both ways but they lost 3 & 1 on the 17th green. Josh Greenaway and Richard Jasper had their noses in front most of the way but again left it till the last green to win 1 up. The final match with Rob McGregor and Harry Hall also swung this way and that and having been 1 down on the 16th tee won the next 2 holes to be 1 up on 18 only to put their drive deep in the left hand rough from which recovery proved to be too much so it ended match halved. Overall Cornwall won 8 ¼ to 5 ¾ to get the week off to a good start. Tomorrow is another day and Cornwall face Somerset.

In the other matches today Dorset beat Somerset and Gloucestershire beat Wiltshire. The weather looks set fair for another great day of County golf tomorrow. Well done Scott Gibson and his boys for presenting the course in such pristine state for such a big week.
