Seniors pip the Piranos (despite casualties !)

Published: 12th May 2015

On Monday 11th May, the Seniors met the old adversaries, from a similarly designed James Braid course, the Perranporth Piranos. This time last year the old boys had managed an impressive victory of 5½ - 2½. They knew that the Piranos were intent on revenge so the team was ready to stiffen its sinews, summon its blood and lend its eye a terrible aspect !

One or two were prepared to ignore medical advice to sacrifice themselves in the conflict to come. John Westlake had woken up convinced that he had somehow broken a rib during the night such was the pain emanating from his chest. How this might have happened was open to several theories from his team mates, which are best not repeated here ! Nevertheless he struggled in, smiling as ever, to offer his support. As it happened he managed to play as far as the 6th hole where, after hitting his tee shot he collapsed in a heap having pulled a tendon. Fortunately, medical advice was at hand in the form of a retired doctor who insisted he limp in to the clubhouse. Paul Godfrey continued on his own and did very well to sustain the match up to the 17th hole.

John Russell had been told that he should rest his strained Achilles tendon, but he chose to ignore this, and bravely discounted the pain. However, as the round continued, so the discomfort increased and the limp from green to buggy became more pronounced. Such was his determination that he won nearest the pin on the 15th. So his heroic self-sacrifice was rewarded with a decent bottle of red wine.

On a day when St Enodoc was at its most splendid best and the course was in excellent condition, everyone agreed that it had been an excellent occasion. This was augmented by the Old Saints overcoming adversity and romping home 6 - 2. Brings a tear to the eye !
