Seniors overcome St Mellion

Published: 29th April 2014

The return match against St Mellion on Monday 28 April, resulted in a satisfying win for the Old Saints. After a narrow defeat on foreign soil a couple of weeks of weeks ago, a win on the links, 6 – 2 proved very sweet.

Captain of the day Mike Maberly made light of his own defeat by distracting the teams at dinner with fascinating stories of golf in the south-east during WW2 when slices, hooks and hazards occasionally had to take second place behind the consequences of enemy action. Sadly, some of those present were able to remember those days, if not their golf of those days ! The only ‘enemy’ action on the course today came when a recalcitrant mower reduced a visitor’s ball to Srixon shrapnel – though there were no other casualties ! There were some good wins, notably Messers Thomas and Mindell, and Willmott and Sandercock returned results of 7 & 5 and 5 & 3 respectively. Once again, the culinary delights produced by our kitchen staff were described by our visitors as the envy of those clubs on the senior circuit, so another very big thank-you to all those responsible.

  • Mike Maberly & Paul Godfrey lost 4 & 2
  • Nigel Thomas & Tony Mindell won 7 & 5
