After months of hard work and preparation, the annual Seniors’ Open got under way on Monday 6th October with a full field of 108 players. Such is the reputation of our Club and course, as well as competitors from many Cornish clubs, others from as far afield as Bristol, Broadstone, Wilmslow, Uxbridge, Somerset and Devon were successful in the ballot and made the journey west. They were not disappointed. Heavy rain and blustery winds were forecast, but from the outset, it was dry, although the opening tee-shots on the first and ninth into a strong westerly proved an early problem for many. However, the golf gods were in benign mood, for as the day progressed, the temperatures rose, the sun appeared, the wind dropped significantly and the course was there in all its glory.

There were two categories of prizes – one for the home players and another for the visitors – and in addition to some fine golf, there were also tight finishes at the top of the leaderboards.

In view of the golfing challenge the course presents, perhaps it was not entirely unexpected that the overall winners in the 4BBB format came from the home club. The evergreen Frank (Big Easy) Harper and his partner Mike Worden returned a creditable 41 points, closely followed by Peter Commings and Paul Godfrey with 40.

There was high praise and warm thanks all round for the high standard of the course and the catering, to say nothing of the slick running of the event. Whilst there was much assistance from the band of senior helpers, the main plaudits must be reserved for the Seniors’ Secretary, Tony Mindel (not forgetting Di of course !) whose efficient organization came as no surprise and was the foundation for a highly successful day.
