Seniors News for July 2011

Published: 1st August 2011, Updated: 16th September 2011

This was a curious month marked by the absence of a formal, Seniors competition of any sort on the Holywell, as the Stableford was twice postponed and finally cancelled because of poor weather and therefore too few, would-be participants. On the Church course our Vice-Captain, Harry Gliddon, spread-eagled the field with 39 points, remarkably including two blobs, followed by a resurgent Frank Harper in second place on 35 points with Richard Parsons third on 33.

The results of the matches make sorry reading. On a glorious day at Trevose we were trounced 7 -1 in spite of some of our pairs playing more than decent better-ball golf. At Truro some hard-fought games were brought to a premature end, when the match was abandoned because the 18th green was underwater – perhaps we should claim an honourable half. At Bude we lost 1 – 5 (the hosts only fielding six pairs) which was mainly caused by a veritable barrage of net pars from a number of rather high handicappers, so we are looking forward to hosting the return match at home, where a maximum of 24 applies. The final match was at Saunton for which the Club Captains stalwart efforts to raise a full team resulted in a loss 2 – 6. Your scribe hopes to be able to report on a few wins before the seasons end.

Finally, thirty-two St. Enodoc Seniors, admirably corralled by David Barber, took part in the Lanhydrock Open with varying degrees of success. Tony Rounsevell led the way with 40 points putting him well up the leader-board followed by Derek Rushton on 39 points ahead on count-back of Mike Jarvis and Charles Rayment. Together with Mike Jarvis, Norman Hawkey and Terry Johns, Tony also won the team prize in the unofficial competition amongst the St. Enodoc four-balls, the team score being a highly commendable 148 points.
