Seniors News for February 2012

Published: 2nd March 2012

Sadly Geoff Longman passed away on Valentine’s Day and will no longer be able to share the privilege we enjoy of playing our two courses that are kept in such good condition throughout the winter months.  Geoff did much of the Holywell competition administration behind the scenes, for which he produced much-admired, computer-generated scorecards.  Very popular with his peers he will be missed by all.
On the Church course the Stableford was won by Ken Metcalfe with 36 points, one ahead of Paul Godfrey who held off the challenge of Geoff Matthews on count-back.  Later in the month an informal, Stableford better-ball was won by Frank Harper and David Barber, thus confirming the benefit of wintering in Portugal.  Hopefully the occasional extra such competition will sharpen us up for the forthcoming inter-club matches.
The Senior Seniors again displayed their sensible nature by cancelling their Stableford hitherto postponed from January, hopefully an example not to be followed by other Club sections.  The Eclectic has attracted a best-ever entry of 23, but there was no change at the top of the leader-board, although some past winners are coming up fast on the outside – two rounds to go.  Casting caution to the winds, the Holywell Stableford resulted in a win for John Godwin with 39 points, one more than Fred Leese (who made a habit of chipping in) with the evergreen David Shapland in the bronze medal position.   A curiosity of John’s win is that it will perversely act as a decremental increase on his Eclectic score, because his handicap has been cut.
