Seniors final match ends in a puddle

A very strong Senior team assembled at Carlyon Bay Golf Club on Monday 24th October for the final match of the season. Autumn weather was clearly in evidence as the cars pulled into the car park, with the russet coloured leaves gusting across the tarmac, and slate grey clouds swirled across St Austell bay. The Gribbon disappeared into a low mist. However, we were assured by the Carlyon Captain that the forecast was encouraging and things would improve as the afternoon wore on.

Given the amount of rain that had already fallen the course looked in very good condition, however the early holes were in the process of being rigorously tined, which meant that some putts reacted quite strangely. But it was the same for both teams. The conditions were playable and matches were conducted in the usual cheerful spirit. As the early pairings arrived at the later holes there was a sustained downpour and greens which had absorbed the rain suddenly began to flood and made putting impossible. Games began to head towards the comfort of the Clubhouse, pausing briefly to hit a ball to the 18th green for the Nearest the Pin prize. Both Captains agreed to give the results as the match stood at that point.

The home Captain spoke poignantly about the end of his year, thanking all those that had helped him during his reign. He wanted to especially thank a particularly vivacious young waitress for her services because she was leaving to go to Spain. He drew her into the room to receive, in person, the warm congratulations of the Club. She responded by saying, “I’m only going for 10 days!”.
