Seniors fight back against St Mellion at Home!
On a dry and sunny Monday the 24th April we welcomed the St Mellion ‘Fossils’ to the Church course for the our home match.
Hopes were high despite a bruising result in the away match where we left ourselves a mountain to climb after a 5 ½ to 2 ½ loss. We were all aware that we needed to win at least six of the matches to prevail overall--a tall order.
As the matches got under way it became clear that the completely different challenge offered by a links course in great condition with hard ground and fast greens was proving testing for our friends from St Mellion. Mike Maberly and Des Kelly started strongly winning the first three holes to establish a strong position which they never let slip. Elsewhere the St Enodoc team also found their form early and managed to hold onto positive positions throughout most of their matches. Particularly pleasing was the win by our second pair Mike Lovett and Nigel Thomas against opponents who have always proved difficult to overcome.
A win by 6 matches to 2 and an overall win for St Enodoc by 8 ½ to 7 ½ was an excellent result.
A noticeable feature of the home and away scores is that most matches were either won or lost by substantial margins and this may be because our Church course and St Mellion’s Nicklaus course are both very challenging but completely different in their characteristics. The few players that managed to emerge victorious in both matches demonstrated an ability to cope well with very different playing environments.
The nearest the pin for St Enodoc was won by Roger Priestly with a great shot to the 15th. Well done Roger!
