Seniors end their season on a high note

Published: 7th November 2015

In perfect golfing weather on a perfect links course, with warm sunshine and whispering breezes caressing them, the Old Saints concluded the season’s fixtures. On Wednesday, 4th November, they recovered some of the consistency that has been such a fickle and elusive companion in so many matches, with a thumping win against the Carlyon Bay Seniors, romping home 7 -1.
Apparently, for several of the opponents, this was their first visit to St Enodoc and they discovered that the benign, picturesque appearance of the course conceals the spiteful, shadow side of its character. The partiality of sinking men for straws to clutch is proverbial, but whilst there was long grass, gorse and water, no straws were to be found that could come to their rescue. Even one pair on the home side might have welcomed a few straws too !
Because of the late start the light was fading rapidly as the final match played the 18th and Old Hickory understands that evergreen Frank Harper has taken his buggy away to have xenon headlights fitted and a Horlicks machine installed.

Old Hickory’s trivia:

The inevitable result of any golf lesson is the instant elimination of the one critical motion that allowed you to compensate for the errors which led you to book the lesson in the first place.

Tennis would be as difficult as golf if you only had one serve; 6 – 0, 6 – 0 were par; you often lost several balls in a single set and every so often you had to hit a backhand from behind a tree.
