Seniors Blown away at Bowood

Published: 13th April 2013

On the occasion of the Seniors’ visit to Bowood for the match on 10 April, the day wore a dull, grey face which grew more sombre as the hours and gentle mizzle wore on.

As befits the Senior Saints, drives soared straight and true to land on the wide, manicured fairways of this delightful parkland course. Irons were struck sweetly with draw or fade and just the right degree of back spin , whilst putts, more difficult to read than a Salman Rushdie novel found their mark. Remarkably, unfortunately and sadly, such finely honed skills proved to be inadequate on the day for the skills and techniques of Bowood wrinklies were honed even more finely.

As captain of the day, Harry G, waited anxiously for each match to finish and, being the spiritual man he is, was heard humming quietly, ‘In Tears of Grief,’ from Bach’s St Matthew Passion.  As one match after another returned, so the gloom deepened, until eventually, the reality dawned – Bowood had won 8 – 0 and were magnanimous hosts in victory. We look forward to the return with enthusiasm and determination – must do better !
