Mike Jarvis receives the Dudley Watts Trophy from Club Captain John Baxter

The Seniors’ season closed on Friday with 50 participants in the Dudley Watts and Len Howarth Trophies followed by the A.G.M. There was some very good golf played on both courses in an increasingly strong and biting wind. Mike Jarvis, Treasurer-elect, prevailed on the Church with an excellent 39 points with David Elliott in the runner-up’s spot, and David Balmford won on the Holywell, also with a highly commendable 39 points, with the in-form Ian Boyd in second place. Nearest the Pin were Jim Crouch on the Church and Tyrell Sandry on the Holywell.

The A.G.M., which seemed particularly good-humoured this year, included a period of silence in memory of the much-missed Geoff Longman, winner last year of the inaugural Girling-Sandry Salver.  In addition to the above-mentioned Dudley Watts and Len Howarth Trophies, prizes and trophies were presented to:

Church Eclectic (Gross)    Paul Godfrey
Church Eclectic (Net)        Tony Mindel
Girling-Sandry Salver        Derek Kingsbury
Frank Harper Trophy        Ian Boyd

Harry Gliddon completed his highly-efficient year of office as Captain by overseeing the hand-over to new Captain, Peter Commings, and Vice-Captain, Nigel Thomas. New members on the Committee are David Balmford, John Harbinson and Derek Rushton.  Fifty-two different players took part in the matches of which, on a combined home & away basis, nine were won and four lost.

Finally a presentation was made to David Girling in appreciation of his ten years as Secretary during which the membership increased from thirty-eight to ninety-six, and the number of competitions rose from three to eight including the highly successful Seniors Open. The meeting was followed by a most enjoyable dinner with our guests, the Club’s Chairman, Captain and General Manager.
