Saunton - a bridge too far for the Seniors?

Published: 26th July 2013

The Seniors are having a difficult and frustrating season which continued in their recent visit to Saunton on 22nd July. The long drive home was probably a very quiet one, because despite fielding a strong team on paper they went down 7 – 1 to another links club. Mike Maberley and Nigel Thomas were the sole winners and Mike had to sink a 35 feet putt for a birdie on the 18th to make sure of that. Neither was it the memorable and sparkling 81st birthday that Ron Irons had planned !

If the regular roll-up performances could be replicated, the match record might be rather different. Keith Willmott achieved a hole-in-one on the 5th one week, to be followed a week later by Harry Gliddon’s eagle on the 3rd. But ‘if only’ does not a victory make !

Richard Parsons & KenMetcalfe lost 2 down

Mike Maberly & Nigel Thomas won 2 up

Charles Rayment & Mike Worden lost 6 & 4

Stuart Sandercock & Tony Mindell lost 6 & 5

Kenton Williams & Derek Rushton lost 6 & 4

Keith Godfrey & Tom Lehan lost 3 & 2

Keith Willmott & Ron Irons lost 4 & 3

Pat Bradbury & Kevin Birkett lost 4 & 3
