Members will be sad to learn of the death of Peter Dimmock aged 94 the face of BBC Sport in the 50s and 60s. Not many Members probably knew that Peter was a St Enodoc Member as he only joined in the 1990s having a holiday house in Trebetherick. Peter joined the BBC in 1946 and first came to national prominence when aged just 32 he persuaded the establishment who had been implacably opposed to it to allow television into Westminster Abbey to show the Coronation live in 1953. Thanks to his meticulous 12 months of planning it was a resounding success and a monumental step forward for television.

In 1955 he became head of the BBC Outside Broadcast Unit, a post he held till 1972 the role was a managerial and organisational one but at the same time he became the “face” of sports broadcasting commentating on many sports and the host of “Sportsview” the first television magazine programme, which he later followed with “Grandstand” in 1958 as its first presenter to be succeeded by David Coleman. The BBC Sports Personality of the Year he also was responsible for; the first winner being Christopher Chataway in 1954. By 1972 when he moved to be the Head of BBC Enterprises he had made the BBC Outside Broadcast Unit the gold standard in the presentation of sport as well as all other national events such as Royal Weddings and the State Opening of Parliament.

By the time that Peter joined St Enodoc he was nearing retirement and those of us who were lucky enough to meet him found him to be a man of unbelievable charm and humility considering what a glittering career he had enjoyed.
