Niblick witnesses yet more problems with four wheels

Published: 22nd April 2017

Besides watching some excellent golf Niblick had a field day on Day 3 of the Cornish Festival when a Member of fellow Atlantic Links club Burnham & Berrow had what can only be described as a meltdown on our 6th hole. Not only had it taken 2 ½ hours to reach that dreaded hole but he then he had the indignity of having to climb right up by the marker post on top of the Himalaya. Having played his shot and returned to Mother Earth he obviously was disorientated from lack of oxygen and completely ignored both the sign on the ground and the large notice on the windscreen of the rented buggy and proceeded to drive undaunted up the steep and narrow path towards the 7th tee.

Problems then arose as the buggy is wider than the path - hence the instructions to go round and approach the 7th tee from the 3rd fairway. Undaunted up up went the brave soul till he finally got stuck not that far from the top. All the other team members were then called upon, a bit like putting Humpty Dumpty back together again to help with its extraction and despite all their efforts no further forward motion was possible.

The only way out of this was to reverse the buggy back down the narrow path which very nearly ended with “a bit of unpleasantness” with the buggy leaving the path, overturning and landing on the green. The good news was that they eventually made it back to terra firma but had held up all the matches behind by yet another 10 minutes.

The following day it was obvious what had happened as there were big gouge marks on both sides of the bank all up the path. Niblick does hope that the said driver has made a full and frank confession reporting any damage to buggy’s coach work. Dangerous game golf and even more dangerous playing from a buggy!
