Mens Mail-on-Sunday extra holes drama

Published: 9th March 2013

Whereas last year the St Enodoc's Mens Mail-on-Sunday teams' efforts got them to far away courses in Wales and Manchester this years team managed only as far as the second extra hole at St Enodoc. After a bye in the first round this was a second round match against Newquay GC.

Robbie Moore lead the team out and secured a solid 2&1 win. Sam Jarvis followed with a half. Andy Bunt was all square on the 17th but a disappointing six on the last saw him lose by one hole - the only time he been down all round. Joe Combellack was not firing at his usual best and lost easily 3&1. Rob Davies was on good form and closed out his match 2&1. The match was thus all square; in this situation under the competition rules the last pair are required to play extra holes.

On the first extra hole Rob Davies was on the green in two after a drive and a four iron. His opponent, Peter East, short and right in two. A decent chip left East with a twelve foot putt for birdie and which he duly holed. Two putts from Rob and the hole was halved in birdies. Up the second, against the wind, Rob was in the middle of the fairway from the tee with 180 yds to go. His opponent was right, in the long grass and could only get as far as the bottom of the hill and from where he chipped up to within six feet. Rob hit his second just a little long and ended up in an awkward place beyond the green. The chip was long and ended up at the bottom of the hill; a poor return handed East and Newquay the match.
