Mail on Sunday Round 4

Published: 7th May 2013

On Monday 6 May 2013 we played our 4th round and final match against a very strong side who had only last month cleaned up at the County Championships so we knew we had our work cut out,  this didn't deter our team one bit.   Jean Tatum, celebrating her 70th birthday (sorry Jean, just couldn't resist!) opened the match against youngster, Abi Maude, taking the match to the 18th where sadly she lost her battle.  Next was Sue Ofield, again playing a low handicapped youngster, Eugenie Knight,  winning her match 4&3.  Rhiannon Rich, her first outing in the Mail on Sunday series, proved a brilliant opponent and played too well for the Carlyon Bay player, Paula Coleman, and won her match 4&2.

So with 2 games in the bag you can imagine the tension.  There was much attention from supporters on the 4th match, Trudie Tensjo's against Lynn Saget, which had been all square for much of the day and still so after the 15th, unfortunately victory was not to be and Lynn managed to finish the match 2&1 for Carlyon Bay on the 17th.  This left much pressure on the final match, Sarah Sandercock versus Emily Toy, the junior who had just been crowned County Champion at Tehidy.  Sarah had left the 12th green 4 down but by the time we caught up with her again coming off the 16th tee she had managed to pull the match back to all square, an incredible feat.   All eyes were on the 18th hole, a tricky par 3, Sarah teed off first putting her drive approx 18" from the hole and Emily's drive ended up in the bunker.  We all held our breath as Emily played a fantastic shot out of the bunker placing her ball inches from the hole.  The hole was halved so up the 19th we went where unfortunately after a stunning drive from Sarah Emily won the hole to win the match.

What a day, what a team,  as Captain I couldn't have felt prouder.  Well done St Enodoc ladies, you played fantastically and made it an extremely difficult win for the Carlyon Bay team - I hope they appreciated the skill they witnessed today.
