Magor Gold Medal & Woodcote Park Cups
Joe Cruse
The Magor Gold Medal, the major mens competition of the year – our Club Championship which also incorporates the Woodcote Cup, was played for on Saturday 2nd June . The format for the competition is 36 hole medal with the first 18 holes in the morning counting towards the Woodcote Cup and with prizes morning and afternoon for the best gross and the best nett there was a lot at stake for all those competing.
The conditions for the day were dry but very breezy making scoring tricky on the church course but one player rose to the challenge better than all the rest, playing alongside Mike Buse and Geoff Jones, Joe Cruse shot an incredible 66 gross in the morning playing off +1 and won the morning gross and nett, he then followed this with a gross 69 in the afternoon for a score of 135 to which no other player came close, his nearest challenger being Hugh Maurice some 13 shots adrift, a superb display of golf which his playing partners said was a joy to watch and he richly deserved to retain his position of Club Champion.
