Lots and varied action for the Ladies

Published: 23rd June 2012

It's been a busy week for the St Enodoc Ladies with the Goodman Goblets being played for on Sunday 17th June, an Open Day on Tuesday and the Baron Rose Bowl County Competition on Thursday. The Goodman Goblets, which is a Foursomes Stableford competition, had a good entry and resulted in many pairs finishing on the same score of 31 points. Barbara Graham and Di Dingle came through as winners on countback from Gloria Crouch and Mary Baillie.

Our first Open Day of the year was a Four Ball Better Ball Competition off 3/4 handicap with over 60 ladies from clubs far and wide in the field. We were very fortunate to have fine weather for this competition and everyone enjoyed their golf which was followed by a lovely meal in the club restaurant. Prizes were made up of Dartington glassware and Marks and Spencers vouchers. The overall winners were Micah Carrol of Perranporth and Jan Harrison from Launceston with 42 points. In second place were S Lee and E Bennett, both from The Wisley who scored 41 points and in third place were R Perkins and C Matthews from West Cornwall with 39 points. Marie Bradbury (St Enodoc) and G Bostel (Ellesborough) came 4th with 37 points beating Gill Catran and D Sedgman from West Cornwall on countback. The sixth prize went to K Gosling and C Main from Chippenham who scored 36 points.

Only 3 ladies scored a 2 and consequently went home with 32 golf balls each! They were, Micah Carrol, Marie Bradbury and J Miller (East Devon). The Nearest the Pin prize which for the Silver Division was on the difficult 11th hole went to Marie Bradbury. The Longest Drive (Silver Division) on the 13th Hole went to Grö Lomas from Royal North Devon and for the Bronze Division on the 7th Hole was awarded to Rosalind Osborne from Bude.

The Baron Rose Bowl was held at Newquay Golf Club this year and yet again the weather turned against us. The early part of the day was showery but from mid-day the weather deteriorated and rain was continuous for the rest of the day with the wind increasing as the day went on. This made play very difficult but somehow some great scores were achieved. The competition is 36 holes of Medal Foursomes with 3 pairs representing each club. St Enodoc's pairings were Celia Jarvis and Trudie Tensjo, Meg Godfrey and Shannon Ashcroft, and Di Dingle and Jax Buse.

Overall, the team came 10th out of 20 teams. However, combining experience with youth certainly paid off as Meg and Shannon beat all the field in the afternoon despite the awful conditions to come in with an extremely impressive nett 73.5 to win the best afternoon prize. After coming off the course in such unpleasant conditions it was a pleasure for everyone to hear that they had played so well.
