Katie Rule through to Final Qualifying for the Womens Open

Published: 16th July 2013

Yesterday (15th July) was the Ricoh British Open qualifying at The Berkshire with almost 140 entries entries for only 25 places. The field was made up with players not only from the UK, but from over all over Europe, and even from Australia, China, and New Zealand.

Katie's bag normally is filled with clothing to accommodate the usual English summer, but this year was full of water bottles, her Dad (caddy, chauffeur etc) could hardly lift the bag from the car,  (but had no problem putting the bag back in the car at the end of the day!)

At almost 1pm Katie teed off, with one bad bounce and 2 short putts missed Katie was 3 over after only 2 holes, her caddy began to think he may be spared the drive to St Andrews, but Katie had other ideas. Throughout the next 14 holes Katie had 5 birdies and 9 pars, to be 2 under par, a bogey at 17 and a solid par at the 18th created a 1 under par 71.

Considering that the course was set up from the men's white tees this was an excellent achievement after a bad start. Katie was one of only 7 English golfers to qualify ( 3 better than her) and the rest made up from international players, the winner by 2 shots (66) was from Australia.

Father (caddy, chauffeur, Travel Lodge finder) has now to start looking at St. Andrews, the final pre-qualifying is at Kings Barn Golf Links, on the 29th July with the Open starting a few days later.

Next week, Katie travels to South Herts G.C. for the next WPGA competition being held on the 24th (changed from the 22nd).
