CGU Amateur Championship Qualifying County Week Perranporth GC Wednesday 17th May 2017

Reigning County Amateur Champion Joe Cruse (St Enodoc) began the defence of his title in style yesterday topping the 36 hole qualification after two rounds of 3 under par 69 for a total of 138 (-6).

Going off the first in the morning round he completed the front 9 in 2 over 38 before storming the back 9 in a 5 under 31 shots. In the afternoon he was 1 under through 9 and 2 under on the back to lead the field of 69 players from whom the top 32 qualified for today’s matchplay knockout stages.

Top morning score came from Matt Lock with a 5 under 67 comprising 6 birdies and just the one bogey after an early morning dash back home resulted in him just back in time to start. Whilst he could not repeat the score in the afternoon when he returned 75 to qualify comfortably.

2014 Champion Matt Richards (West Cornwall) qualified in second spot with rounds of levl par 72 and 2 under 70. He just pipped county team mate Richard Jasper (Launceston) into 3rd spot on countback after Jasper returned a pair of 71s. Trevose’s Richard Ackland rolled back the years and qualified in 5th spot with rounds of 73 and 71 for a level 144 total 2 shots ahead of Newquay’s Lee Cunningham who followed a first round 77 with a 3 under 69.

As a packed clubhouse sought a late afternoon play off the exact number required hit the 32 mark with senior Rod Handyside (West Cornwall) the last man in on 157 (79 +78). His reward is to face Cruse this morning. Andrew Clotworthy (Tehidy Park) was able to claim ‘oldest qualifier’ bragging rights after the 58 year old scored 79 and 77 to get through and now face Jasper.

Thursday lunchtime will see the Amateur Championship field reduced to 16 and come Thursday evening just 8. Also taking place on Thursday is the Western Morning News Challenge Cup, a 3 man team event with two scores to count.
