St Enodoc Ladies have a lot to celebrate due to a very successful time at the County Championships held at West Cornwall Golf Club from 17th to 20th April. The qualifying day was very windy with the added distraction of hard showers, sometimes of hail, which made play difficult on such an open links course.

Six players entered from St Enodoc - Katie Rule, Sarah Sanderson, Meg Godfrey, Barbara Graham, Di Dingle and Lauren Williams. On the 36 hole qualifying day, St Enodoc Ladies won the Western Morning News Cup for the best 4 scores by a margin of 19 shots from Carlyon Bay (Katie - 161, Sarah - 162, Lauren - 175 and Meg 179). However, there was more to come as Katie and Lauren played so well that they won 5 further awards between them. Katie won the Aston Bowl for the best 18 Holes (Scratch) with a gross 77 and the Rowe Cup for the best Under 23 morning (Scratch) with her score of 77.

Lauren (playing off 14 handicap) impressed everyone by scoring gross 84 in the morning and 91 in the afternoon, despite the conditions, and this cut her handicap by 3 to 11. Her reward was to be presented with the Challenge Cup for the best 36 hole score off handicap (Net 147), the Judy Taylor Cup for the best under 25 score off handicap over 36 holes and the 18 Hole Handicap Prize for her morning round of Net 70. What a wonderful achievement for both of them! Lauren then went on to play in the Plate where she was knocked out in the first round.

Katie played some fantastic golf to get through to the final which was played over 36 holes. Once again she played against Sarah-Jane Boyd of Truro Golf Club, finishing the morning round only one down. In the afternoon the score remained close but the putts just would not drop and eventually Sarah-Jane came out the winner by a 2 and 1 margin after a hard and well fought match.

Sarah Sanderson also qualified for the championship knockout only losing in the quarter final to Jan Sargeant. As a result of this both Katie and Sarah have been selected for the Cornwall A Team squad and Lauren has been selected for the Cornwall B Team squad.

At St Enodoc a High/Low Competition was played on the Holywell Course. The winners were Annie Hawkey and Bobbie Rounsevell with 42 points followed by Sue G Jones and Ann Worden with 40 points and Lorna Harper and Dot Frewin with 39 points.

The next round of the Mail On Sunday will be played at St Enodoc on Saturday 28th April against Perranporth Ladies.
