With his customary gifted touch our Captain organised two days of fine weather for the many Members who took part in the three competitions run over the weekend.

First up, on Saturday, was a Texas Scramble on the Holywell Course the winners - with a score of 54.1 net - of which were the team of

  • Derek Kingsbury
  • Beth Elliott
  • Jean Nicholls and
  • Viv Mably

On Sunday the competition on both courses was a mixed "Flag" competition. Now this is a fiendishly difficult format designed to test the strongest of marriages and partnerships; medal format but with a limited number of shots allocated to each pair. Thus the afternoon can end quite quickly for those not on form. It has been suggested that a secondary objective of the format is to find a use for the ubiquitous Garmin/SkyCaddie gadgets - as in "We finished 2035.5 yards from the 18th green". Some rather big numbers were run up by several pairs, none larger than the 13 shots taken on the 6th hole of the Holywell. Despite this the retired Veterinary Surgeon from the nascent Peoples Republic of Alba and his partner nonetheless did remarkably well to continue their round as far as the 18th green.

Winners on the Church Course were

  • 1st Rod Frost & Sue Kingston
  • 2nd Norman & Annie Hawkey
  • 3rd Tony & Bobbie Rounsevell

Winners on the Holywell Course were

  • 1st Lynn & Nigel Ashcroft
  • 2nd Jo & Roger Heydon
  • 3rd Judy Cole & Tuck Clagett

The weekend was completed in fine style with a barbeque and dancing in a packed clubhouse to the strains of a local jazz band.

It looks more like an Edwardian Garden Party than a Golf Club social. More Sauvignon Blanc Colonel?
