Joe's early golf was played with his father, Bob, on the Holywell course when Joe would walk round just with a putter and use it to hit every shot including off the tee. He joined the Academy at the age of 10 or 11 and soon came under the watchful eye of Mark Arrowsmith. Bob claims that Mark said to him after one of Joe's very first lessons "We have a scratch golfer here"

Mark is the only coach that Joe has ever had and still passes on to Joe observations and tips about what he sees. Joe soon developed into a useful golfer, so useful in fact that he played his first round on the Church Course at the age of twelve. Progression to the County U-14 team soon followed also at the age of twelve. Age fourteen saw Joe in the Duchy U-16 team. His first full County appearance in the Channel League came at age fifteen when he was also playing in the U-18 team. Fellow junior and Member Charlie Runnalls also made his debut for the County on the same day. Joe was seventeen when he first became a scratch golfer. He has now been playing in the County team for 10 years and once had twenty-six consective singles victories. Next weekend will see Joe playing in his eighth SW Counties week for the black and gold of Cornwall.
