This is an annual competition for Senior teams from Cornwall which was played at Perranporth on August 22nd. Each team has five pairs whose total better Ball Stableford score counts towards the eventual prize.

There were early showers but these eventually cleared to leave Perranporth sunlit but freshened by a stiff breeze. The greens were fast and the pin positions reminded one competitor of our Pandora’s box sense of humour.

Our leading pair of Peter Commings and Mike Maberly were impressive with a score of 37 points off ¾ handicap. They finished fourth out of fifty pairs.

The rest of the team supported them with some consistent scoring: Mike Worden, Harry Gliddon, Keith Hawke John Westlake, Keith Willmott and Richard Parsons. This placed St Enodoc in first place for much of the afternoon.

Unfortunately the Senior Captain and the Club Chairman had an abysmal round (their names have been withheld to spare their blushes). Some pairs “knit” successfully this pair would have been better sewing at home. They are consumed with guilt and shame and can only offer their sincere apologies for denying the rest of the team a deserved victory.

With all of the scores quite close this weak link proved decisive. We finished 7th out of 10 teams. Perranporth won with a score of 173. At least they avoided the wooden spoon which went to Carlyon Bay!
