A normal Farmers Weekly turnout varies between twenty-five and forty dependent on the season and weather. Such is the popularity of the annual Farmers Christmas bash however that some forty-eight "Farmers" signed up to play today, some of whom had not been seen on a Thursday since the early Ice Age.

These events are always somewhat noisy and boisterous with balloons and poppers making as much noise as a WWII air raid. The mess afterwards would leave the average five year old embarrassed; Iain Grey and his staff are probably there now clearing up as this piece is typed.

In recent years the event has been blighted with rather inclement weather but today the good God Pluvius stayed away and with only a mild breeze and about 12 degrees C this was almost perfect winter golfing weather. As usual the format for the day was the traditional fourballs, the aggregate stableford score of the four counting towards the Annual Cole Cup. In addition there was an individual stableford competition.

Eric Symons keeps many statistics concerning the Farmers weekly outing and advises that this year

  • 122 different players participated
  • there were only 25 rounds of 36 points or more
  • whilst there were also 119 of 20 points or less
  • Mike Kent won more money than any other player in the last year

Those in the money today were

1st Mark Arrowsmith 37 points

2nd Bill Gowans 35 points

3rd Lewis Bradley

Whilst the Cole Cup was won with a score of 135 points by Nick Williams, Adrian Halling, Lewis Bradley and Colin Renolds
