A full field of 72 players arrived early doors on Sunday 11th September to compete in the Club’s premier open event – The Ernie Goodman Trophy. Also played on the day was the Rachel Biddle Trophy for the best gross score in this 36-hole competition. This event is played from many of the blue tees on the Church Course and visiting players from throughout the country (some of whom for the first time) were greeted by the full force of this testing venue, with an ever strengthening south westerly wind. At the lunch break it was interesting to watch players scratching their heads, wondering how a course that measured less than 6500 yards could be so punishing. Nonetheless, the greens were in perfect condition and compliments abounded on the overall presentation of the course.

This is an Order of Merit event for the Cornwall Golf Union and several of the County stars were on hand. Matt Richards from West Cornwall, Josh Greenaway of Bowood Park, Rob MacGregor from Tehidy Park and Conor Wilson from Perranporth were all in the mix. Our own Joe Cruse was unable to participate as he was unwell on the day.

At the end of play on a very long day, the winner of the Ernie Goodman Trophy was Ben Castillo-Bernaus from Sunningdale, with a nett score of 140. The winner of the Rachel Biddle Trophy with an impressive combined 147 was Rob MacGregor, winning on countback over Conor Wilson.

A special thank-you must be given to those many members who volunteered their time helping with the competition – ball-spotters, drivers, starters – without whom completing this day in the allotted time would be virtually impossible.
