Day 2 of the South Western Championships

Published: 6th June 2016

Day 2 of the South Western Championships saw Cornwall beat Somerset 9-5 which looked a comfortable victory but the matches were hard fought. The weather was dry and with lightish wind but lacking Sunday's sunshine the conditions were set for good golf. In the morning Singles the Cornwall pathfinder Joe Cruse halved his match with Jamie Lie and with wins for Conor Wilson, Josh Greenaway, Harry Hall and Rob McGregor we went into lunch with just a one point margin so it was all to play for in the Foursomes.

Joe Cruse and Matt Richards fairly romped round the course in every sense of the word being 3 up at the turn and winning comfortably 5 & 4 and almost 3 holes clear of the match behind! The Perranporth boys Conor Wilson and Chris Fleming had a real battle which went to the final hole which they sadly lost with an errant second shot having been one up on the tee - so match halved. Josh Greenaway kept his 100% winning record going for with partner Richard Jasper they had a most impressive 4 & 3 win having birdied their last 2 holes 14 and 15. The final match of Harry Hall and Jared Mortimore was probably the toughest match for having been 1 down at the turn then 1 up on the 16th tee. With their second shot to the last green bunkered they just failed to get up and down so they also came away with ¾ of a point for a half. In the other matches  Gloucestershire beat Dorset 9 ½ - 4 ½ and Wiltshire beat Devon 9 - 5.

Tomorrow sees a day of 36 holes of Medal play to decide the individual Champion and also with nominated teams of 6 from each County the aggregate score will decide which County represents the South West in the English Counties final which strangely is all Match play – sounds logical to me!
