Round 1 of this year's Cornwall Team Championship saw St Enodoc play St Austell at a windy and occasionally wet Tehidy on Sunday 28th October. Despite the absence of many familiar faces in the side St Enodoc won the match emphatically thanks to a terrific display in the afternoon singles.

The Foursomes opened proceedings and ended up 2 matches a piece with wins for Captain Steve Chapman and débutante Mike Weaver (who, like Mark Justice, plays most of his golf at Walton Heath) 5 & 4 over Alex Symes & Simon Bertho and Kristian Godfrey & Mark Justice who from 3 down fought back to beat Simon Harper & Gary Johns 1 up. Simon has played for the last 34 years in the CTC and thinks he is without doubt the oldest campaigner still competing. First match out had been Antony Nash & Rob Davies against Shaun Harvey & Billy Couzens which surprisingly went to the St Austell pair 3 & 2. By a similar margin Robbie Moore, also making his CTC debut, and Andy Bunt went down to Dan Olver & Chris Bailey 3 & 2. So at lunch the match was all square but with advantage to St Enodoc as 9th Man Simon Welch beat Peter Groocock 2 & 1 in the tie decider.

The afternoon singles got off to an explosive start with Antony Nash, fresh off his Hole in One at the 13th at Trevose, after having 3 putted the first 2 greens promptly won the next 10 holes on the trot with 6 Birdies to win 8 & 6 against Alex Symes! Steve Chapman, the Ian Poulter of St Enodoc when it comes to match play, beat Simon Bertho 6 & 5. Shaun Harvey steadied the ship for St Austell with a one hole win against Rob Davies. Thereafter it was wins all the way for St Enodoc with Mike Weaver an emphatic 6 & 5 win over Billy Couzins, Robbie Moore winning 2 & 1 over Dan Olver, Mark Justice overcame Chris Bailey 5 & 4, Kristian Godfrey beat Gary Johns by the same score and finally Andy Bunt triumphed over Simon Harper 5 & 3.

The Ryder Cup style singles performance ensured that the match was won 9 – 3 and earned us a second round tie on November 18th against Trevose where we will really need to have our “A” game on display against such strong opponents so put the date in your diaries now!
