So to the play off knockout stages of the Cornwall Amateur Championship with 3 St Enodoc players in the lucky 32 to make the cut. First out was Joe Cruse who had a straightforward 6 & 5 win over Justin Barnard from Tehidy. Antony Nash also moved on to the last 16 with a 2 & 1 win against Dean Tulley from West Cornwall. Not so lucky was Rob Davies who went out 4 & 3 against Josh Hancock from Newquay.

First match out in the last 16 was the encounter between Joe Cruse and Josh Greenaway who has loyalties to both St Enodoc, where he is a member, and also Bowood where he is Golf Manager. Many thought that this was really the final (which time alone will tell) and it was a pity that they had to meet so early in the draw. A titanic match was all square with 3 to play when Josh sank a long putt on the 16th that had it not gone in would certainly have left the green it was going at such speed. Try as he might Joe could not win either 17 or 18 so lost the match by one hole.

The final St Enodoc player Antony Nash also had a very close game with Richard Simmons from Tehidy, Antony was lucky to retain his one hole advantage on 16 when Richard played a terrific second to the heart of the green but below the slope and with the pin on the back. Antony had an indifferent tee shot so had to lay up and was on the top slope in 3 and had 2 putts whereas the slope got the better of Richard so Antony scraped a half.

The match nearly ended with an ace by Antony on 17 when a tee shot of perfect length came in from the left and went round the back of the hole to finish no more than 3 inches from the right side of the cup. Richard's tee shot was on the back of the green which meant that he had a long putt to save the match which was asking a lot; needless to say he did not achieve the near impossible and Antony won 2 & 1.

Tomorrow, Friday, sees the last 8 quarter-finals in the morning and the last 4 semi-finals in the afternoon. All St Enodoc eyes will be on Antony who plays the very experienced Trevose member Mike Reynard.

Squeezed in to the day also was the Western Morning News Cup an 18 hole medal competition which saw a large field of 92 entries who seemed to find the going tough as the Standard Scratch rose 2 to 73. The winner was Tom Crocker from Carlyon Bay with an excellent net 69 who won on count back from Sam Church from China Fleet. Third was our own Russell Combellack with a 70 from Matt Westlake on 71, Geoff Jones finished a very creditable 10th on 73.
