Club vs The Pedagogues

Published: 22nd September 2016

On Wednesday 21st September St Enodoc hosted a visiting golfing Society called “The Pedagogues” which comprises teachers who play throughout the year at a variety of prominent courses mostly situated in the south east of England. Cornwall is one of their furthest journeys but it is always well supported.

John Baxter is our representative and liaison officer, but other commitments required him to forfeit his attendance this week. He recruited Tyrrell Sandry to be his amanuensis, however he had to support his wife who was undergoing an operation. John Radford was unavailable; so it fell to Nigel Thomas to greet these peripatetic pedagogues.

With the season of mists and mellow fruitlessness rapidly approaching we were pleased to enjoy fine golfing weather. Many Seniors had only just dried out after a drenching on Monday. The format was foursomes match play, possibly to speed the play so that we could enjoy lunch, which the visitors generously provided. All the matches were played in a friendly but competitive spirit and most were finely balanced.

Tony Beedles, their captain, praised St Enodoc’s course and hospitality. He spoke amusingly, quoting Yogi Berra, an American baseball player,

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

"Always go to other people's funerals; otherwise they won't go to yours.

"I really didn't say everything I said."[

And on a local restaurant, "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."
