Following the pattern of recent years, because applications for a place were over-subscribed, a ballot was necessary to decide the entries for the annual Seniors’ Open held on Monday, 3rd October. Its popularity is clear testimony to the quality and status of the course and the Club.

Play began in delightful autumnal conditions with blue skies, sunshine and a gentle breeze combining to show off the course at its impeccable best. However, that lurking guardian of the links, the teasing wind, was soon to remind the players how quickly it can transform the course into a more formidible golfing challenge. The fact that only one competitor was able to get his ball to reach and stay on the 17th green to win a £20.00 NTP voucher is clear evidence of that.

The scores reflected the difficulties of the day, but in the end the home pairing of Paul Godfrey and Kevin Birkett, retiring Seniors’ Captain and Secretary respectively, carried off the Norman Walmsley Trophy with a winning score of 42 points. The next best score for a St Enodoc pair was 36 points, whilst the best for a visiting pair was 40 points by Peter Groocock and Derek Loader of St Austell.

Competition for the longest drive brought the inevitable and well-worn witty quips concerning who might have won it. On the course it was Mike Richards from Whitsand Bay, but off the course, a drive from Wilmslow (the winner last year) beat one from Goring by about 60 miles. !

As we have come to expect, compliments and praise for every aspect of the Club, course, catering and general organization were to be heard in abundance.
