The Seniors Church KO finalists - left Kevin Birkett and who beat Nigel Thomas

On Wednesday 31st August Kevin Birkett and Nigel Thomas met in the Final of the Senior Knockout for 2016. Each had dispatched a number of significant victories on the way to the final. Kevin had beaten Richard Parsons, Paul Godfrey (who is enjoying a rich vein of form), and Charles Rayment. All of the matches went to the Eighteenth Green. Nigel had beaten Keith Hawke, Mike Lovett, Richard Norsworthy, and Colin Earle.

The weather on the day was disappointingly overcast and damp with a persistent drizzle dampening the heavy rough. The match began well for Mr Thomas taking an early lead which continued up to the 13th and 14th holes where Mr Birkett brought the game back to all square. The 15th and 16th were halved and then Mr Thomas birdied the 17th to go one up. They both drove well and then their second shots were just short of the 18th. Playing first Mr Birkett managed to hit the early slope of the green which killed the run of the ball, leaving him at the front of the green. Mr Thomas ran his ball to within feet of the hole. Some Seniors will remember Terry Wogan’s putt on “A round with Alliss” which was considered to be the longest ever made on television. Mr Birkett, with many members watching from the Clubhouse, rolled the ball the length of the green and dropped it nicely in the hole to square the match and send it down the 19th hole.

Congratulations to Mr Birkett on becoming the 2016 Knockout Champion
