Church Course Report
Present cutting heights: Greens- 3 mm, Surrounds- 8 mm, Tees- 8 mm, Fairways- 12 mm.The greens received their annual maintenance this month which consisted of the greens being tined with ½” tine, heavy sand dressing applied (1.5 tons per green) and then over seeded with pure Fescue. Once this process had been done we were reliant on the weather to introduce a final dressing and the Bent seed, which was achieved.
Played in very difficult windy conditions, today Sunday 23rd October at Carlyon Bay GC, St Enodoc got their 2011/12 CTC campaign off to a convincing start by winning every single match both morning and afternoon. ...Our Cornwall Bowl team unfortunately lost 3 - 2 in the first round on Saturday 15th October against Launceston at Bude. The full results are as follows-

...Ten St Enodoc mixed pairs bravely ventured out of the County on Sunday 9th October to the Northam Burrows at Westward Ho! RND lays claim to being the oldest links course in England and is rightly famed for that. Originally designed by Old Tom Morris and modernised in 1908 by Henry Fowler the course is common land and a wayward shot will still put a commoners sheep or pony in danger. In short the place is full of character and history and on Sunday also full of wind and drizzle to add to the...

Thirteen fourballs set off from the 1st tee and another thirteen from the 9th tee from 10.00 a.m. to compete for the Norman Walmsley Trophy in glorious sunshine thankful that our Indian summer had lasted another day. Two hours later, as the dampening sea-mist advanced inexorably towards the course and the gentle zephyr transformed itself into a gusting wind, the game of golf became a different challenge and a few scores suffered as a result. However, some continued as if the sun...

Weather as good as we have had all summer was one of the rewards for all those who signed up for our Club Captains Day on Saturday 1st October. This event was also coupled with the Mens Prize Giving Dinner.
Played in teams of four the stableford golf competition had a unique risk and reward scoring system designed to benefit those who chose to play from the Blue tees - but only if the score was par or better - a bogey or worse resulted in nul points. This did not deter Joe Cruse who...
The month began with an upturn in fortune evidenced by a convincing 5 ½ - 2 ½ win at home against Royal North Devon, but this was sadly reversed with interest in the away match which RND won 6 ½ - 1 ½ (in spite of a dogged, hard-earned point by our last pair) thereby retaining the Johnny Fallon Driver trophy by a score of 9 – 7. Against Bude at home, played in the tail–end of Hurricane Katia, the team achieved a 3 – 3 draw, but again lost...
Perfect weather was the order of the day for a change on Sunday 25th September for the home match against Saunton which saw St Enodoc run out the winners 5 - 3. The summer long Mens singles knockout came to an exciting end on the 19th green with Andy Bunt beating Dave Pooley. Andy reached the final having overcome Colin Earle who had had a great run to reach the semis. Dave on the other hand had to beat son Dan in the quarter finals before coming up against the tough competition in the form of John Pease in the semis whom he also dispatched.
...On Tuesday 20th September St Enodoc welcomed ladies from far a wide for their Open Day. Unfortunately, the weather let us down badly with rain that worsened as the day went on and blustery winds. However, the bravehearted ladies left the first tee to play in a 3 Ball Better Ball Competition in the hope that they could overcome the elements. Only 3 teams did not complete the course and some very wet ladies achieved some surprisingly good scores!
The winners were Barbara...
The Gammon Trophy Final was played on Sunday, 18th September, at Trevose Golf Club in the most horrendous conditions imaginable. The wind was gale force and the one hard shower of rain was extreme and made play very difficult for all involved. A good crowd of supporters from both clubs braved the elements as well to cheer on their team. St Enodoc played Perranporth in a very closely fought battle with many matches lost and won on the 17th and 18th holes. Di Dingle won her match 5 &...
On Tuesday 13th September, a blustery and showery day, saw 26 pairs of extremely determined ladies compete in the Cornwall versus the Rest of the World 4 Ball Matchplay event. Appropriately dressed in some sometimes intersting uniforms the Cornish Ladies beat the Rest of the World 8 matches to 5. The golf was followed by a pasty lunch and donatons were made to the Captains Charity.
On Friday 16th Sarah Sandercock played Di Dingle in the Final of the President\'s Cup which...
There has been a new addition to our resident gamekeepers family. He goes by name of Nigel and he is a Goshawk.
The English name derives from the Anglo-Saxon for \"Goose Hawk\". The scientific name was given during the middle ages when only noblemen were allowed to fly them. \"Accipiter\" is Latin for hawk and \"gentilis\" comes from the Old French \"gentil\" meaning noble (which is where the English words Gentleman and Gentry are derived and ultimately from the Latin...
Due to the horrendous weather on Tuesday 6th September no golf was played on that day. On Friday 9th we played our penultimate League match against Tehidy in some lovely weather. The score was close and some good golf was played. However, we eventually lost 4-3.
The Ladies Club Championship was played on Sunday 11th in ever worsening conditions. The wind was extreme and got worse as the day wore on. However, we were lucky to only have a couple of hard showers. Scoring was...
Church Course Report
Present cutting heights: Greens- 3mm, Surrounds- 8 mm, Tees- 8 mm, Fairways- 12 mm
This month on the greens my focus has been on maintaining a good quality surface now that we have had the consistency in growth. So to achieve this, greens were sprayed with a conditioner (seaweed, iron and potassium) a total of 3 times. A growth regulator was applied. The greens were then tined with an 8mm tine, rolled and top-dressed, each receiving 0.5...
On Tuesday 30th August we enjoyed some lovely golfing weather and a large field played a Stableford on both the Church and Holywell Courses.
On the Church Course 2 family members excelled themselves! Janine Clagett had a briliant hole in one on the fifth hole and when she came in to celebrate she found her daughter Anna had scored a fantastic 45 points! What a day!! Anna reduced her handicap to 16. Second in Division 1 was Larry Barnecutt with 37 points and third was Sue...
Cornwall 2nd team played Devon 2nd team at Staddon Heights. Cornwall won 7-2 and will now meet Dorset in the final at a venue to be arranged sometime in October. Bev played foursomes with Suzanne Courtenay from Bude and they won 3 and 1. In the singles Bev won 7 and 6! The morning was glorious but it was a wet and windy afternoon!
A total of 72 players from 42 clubs throughout England arrived in the early hours of a bright and calm Saturday morning to try their hand at the Church Course over 36 holes of medal play. The Ernie Goodman Trophy has been an annual fixture at St. Enodoc now for many years and is one of the countys premier events. Ernie Goodman was the Professional at St. Enodoc for 25 years, starting in 1956. As usual, the benign conditions did not last and a very pleasant morning turned nasty in the...
Having won their match against China Fleet at the Quarter Final at Carlyon Bay last Tuesday our Junior team took their place in the semi-finals and final of this years competition at Tehidy Golf Club on September 1st. They were drawn against a strong side, West Cornwall, in the semi-final in the morning whilst Merlin were drawn against Carlyon Bay, the winner of each match to play the final in the afternoon. The remaining two sides to play for third and fourth places in the...
Every year we host a scramble on our Holywell Course aimed at our own junior girls with a high handicap and girls from throughout the County. This year, with our junior section expanding so rapidly, we included a St Enodoc boy with a high handicap too. Teams were made up of one St Enodoc Lady, one St Enodoc boy, one St Enodoc girl and a girl from another club in the county. Its a great starting point for many juniors who do not get to play in competitions until their handicaps ...
Fifty-nine players teed off on Saturday the 3rd of September to compete for the coveted Presidents Cup. This was a drawn competition playing predominantly in 3-balls. The early starters got the best of the weather and conditions became increasingly difficult in the afternoon with rain and wind providing some interesting golf. Scoring was difficult in a westerly wind that sometimes made club choice quite tricky.
In the end it was Mark Richards who dealt best with the elements,...
The Champion Club Tournament was held at The Scarcroft Golf Club in Leeds on 3rd and 4th September and Scarcroft has some trees!!!! Not a long course,(6456 yards par 71) but a course that demands that you fade it sometimes, draw it at other times and it even invites you to hit it straight at times! A good test for all. You had all the English counties there and we were there not only as Club representatives but proudly representing the County as well. Steve Chapman led the team with...
This is the holiday month when Senior Grandfathers turn up at the Monday roll-ups looking for respite from the annual invasion by grandchildren and sundry dogs. The first competition was the Church Stableford won in some style by Peter Commings with 39 points from Harry Gliddon in second on 37 and Geoff Matthews third with 35 - Peter’s gross 73 included a three-off-the-tee at the 11th. In the Holywell Stableford David Girling triumphed with 38 points with Geoff Longman second...
Living in Falmouth and being in full time education not many St Enodoc Members have met Katie but have only seen her name in lights as one of our most talented young players so a short article on her was felt to be in order.
Katie is 18 and only played her first 18 holes of golf at the age of 13 having decided to change sports after winning the British Under 10, 11 and 12 Table Tennis Championships in successive years. So a surprisingly late start to proper golf but ...
Sunday 28th August saw the playing of one of St Enodocs premier mixed events the Viscountess Clifden Trophy and it attracted a large field of 34 pairs eager to play the full handicap Stableford event. It is always a very hard format to score well in and many of the scores on a bright sunny but cool blustery day reflected it. However all the more meritorious therefore were the winning scores which really were very good under the circumstances of the strong North Westerly...
Congratulations to Joe Cruse who won the Cornwall Golf Union Champion of Champions event on Sunday 21st August. This event which was held here at St Enodoc this year is open to all those winners of Cornish club championships, Joe who won the Magor Gold Medal, was therefore our representative. With a gross 67, some 5 under the Standard Scratch of the day, Joe was 4 shots clear of the field and walked away with the Depot Cup awarded to the best gross score.
Captains Away Day and More for the Ladies
Sunday 21st was a fine pleasant day welcomed the 2 early starters for the Roworth Salver "8" Sue Roworth and Kath Biddle who played at 08.21 in order to get in and play in the Cole, Rayment and White Competition on the Holywell Course. Well worth the early start Kath was Runner up in the CRW Competition along with Steve Smith and Zac Burt!
The rest of the field also enjoyed good conditions but tricky pin ...
The cup was played for on Sunday 21 August 2011 and what a fantastic turn out we had. Fourteen teams made up of one Junior, one lady and one gentleman played a Texas scramble on our Holywell course. There was a shotgun start at 12.30 pm and suddenly the course came alive with players young and old all out together for a great game of golf on a warm August afternoon.
It was a pleasure to see the Juniors being encouraged and supported by adult players. For some...
As you would expect it was a tremendous experience for your junior players to play at Woodall Spa in such an event representing Cornwall as the champion club. The organisation was slick and formal and the standard of play at an extremely high level. The course was long, demanding and testing with the greens difficult. You would have been proud of the youngsters ably coping on the big stage.
As you would have expected the scoring was exceptional. In the...
Serial winner Richard Hawken and partner Richard Lawrence yesterday evening (16th August) won this summers Angus Scott Foursomes match play competition. In the final, and conceeding seven shots, they beat Gary Cooper and Nigel Thomas. After a series of golfing mis-adventures on the 6th, 7th and 8th holes Hawken and Lawrence were soon three down. In Richards words they had to get their game back together quickly, and which they subsequently did by winning a string of holes on the back...
On Sunday 14th August the Hoskin Cup was played in pleasant conditions on the Church Course. The winner of the cup, with a net 73, was Sue Willmott who has continued her purple patch following her trip to Carnoustie and winning the Richard Beaven and the runner-up on Net 76 was Mary Rayment.

The Junior Academy side played a much fancied China Fleet side at Carlyon Bay on Tuesday evening in the quarter final stage of The George Bolitho Shield. Sam Jarvis again led from the front playing against County player Sam Church. It was the China Fleet player who raced into an 3 hole lead but to his credit Sam clawed his way back but unfortunately lost the match on the 18th...1 down.
Jake Sanders fresh from his triumph in the Junior Masters Competition took on Jack...
Charged with the heavy responsibility of trying to reverse the fortunes of the Frank Wills team it was good to see that “Revvin” Kevin Francis believes in leading his brave, brave boys from the front.
On Sunday 14th August he played a friendly against a Member of the Captains Committee and his wife Kevin, at the 8th and into a strong left to right cross wind smote a 7 iron in the direction of the hole and encouraged by shouts of “get in” from the...
This was a curious month marked by the absence of a formal, Seniors competition of any sort on the Holywell, as the Stableford was twice postponed and finally cancelled because of poor weather and therefore too few, would-be participants. On the Church course our Vice-Captain, Harry Gliddon, spread-eagled the field with 39 points, remarkably including two blobs, followed by a resurgent Frank Harper in second place on 35 points with Richard Parsons third on...
Sunday 31st July saw the Mens Invitation Day with 36 teams of 2 playing a shotgun start better ball Stableford competition off ¾ handicap. The light breeze and dry conditions ensured that the event was set up for good scoring and the teams certainly did not disappoint. The longest drive on the 2nd was won by Nick Prior and closest to the pin (on the 17th) was won by Kevin Brenton. Those in the serious money were:-
1. Andy Bunt and Adrian Hardy 42...

Niblick hears that the past Past Captains Match on Wednesday 27 July began very optimistically this year with 80% of the 10 Past Captains actually remembering the date and time. However, a hint of the stress these occasions can produce came when three members of the first four ball left the bar saying to the fourth member of their group .. “see you after the match” ...Having been reunited said fourball spent serious time on the first tee exchanging data regarding the...
On Sunday 7th August St Enodoc Ladies met Trevose Ladies at Newquay Golf Club for the semi-final of the Gammon Trophy.
