Lookalikes
Has anyone noticed the striking resemblance between our very own Vice-Captain Geoff Jones and Andy Johnson that speedy, sometime England striker, now plying his trade at Everton? They are facially alike and have strangely similar hairstyles. Geoff himself no mean player in his day can not match Andys skill however and he has had a very successful this season up front for the "Toffees" feeding "the Yaks" goalscoring hunger.

Geoff Jones..................... Andy Johnson

Foreigners in our midst
It was ironic that two members of the (defeated) Cornwall Team in the match against the Rest of the World are in fact members of the lost Mc Kernow clan. History has it that the clan was banished from Scotland and cursed for ever after the Battle of Culloden in 1746 where they failed to to turn up claiming that there was a rail strike which prevented them from travelling north from Cornwall, this despite the fact that there were no railways till 100 years later. Thereafter they hid in shame and dropped the McKernow and adopted english names to cover their true identities. Two have now "come out" to reveal their true ancestory.

Hamish McKernow Cole and Jock Mc Kernow Knight with Brenda Carter providing the glamour. Who said that women dont wear the trousers and where is Hamishs left hand?

Cornwall v The Rest of the World
This annual match finally took place on Saturday 10th May as a result it took place on a glorious hot afternoon and everyone agreed it should remain at this time of year in future years. Cornwall the holders have rarely been beaten in recent years and view the "oggie" trophy as theirs.

Lambs to the slaughter; most of the Cornwall team prior to teeing off

The early matches went Cornwalls way and things looked black for the "foreigners" who were very ably captained by Anders Tensjo. Then the tide turned with an emphatic 6 and 5 win for Gary Deakins and Bob Cruse to be followed by 5 wins in the next 6 matches notably Keith Godfrey and Ian Wotherspoon (7 and 6), Kevin Francis and Julian Darnell (7 and 6). There were some notable wins for Cornwall too namely Nick Williams and Rex Molloy (5 and 4), Andy Bunt and Mike Buse (6 and 5) and Peter Derry and Paul Vincent (7 and 6)

Pete Smith was doing a passable imitation of Peter Snow on election night grappling with the scoresheet forecasting the individual match results and Rex Molloy, sniffing defeat, was already questioning the composition of the Cornwall team which had had to be strengthened with foreigners. Considerable liquid refreshments were required on the balcony as the tension mounted with the match at this stage tied 8 – 8 and the last match on the 18th tee, the players were blissfully ignorant that everything hung on their shoulders. At this point Mark Arrowsmith and Tuck Clagett were 1 up on Dave Bastard and Pete George, even when they reached the green the match position was unknown till after Tuck rolled in the winning putt.

An excellent meal followed with the losers buying the wine followed by entertaining speeches from Rex Molloy (standing in for Cornwall Captain John Warrick who had to leave early or was it the humiliation of defeat?), Anders Tensjo who had to put up with some heckling from the vanquished notably Alan Nicholls who was emphatically told to be quiet or words to that effect by Anders and the Captain Kenton Williams. Rotarian Wayne Mitchell helped by Kentons fines raised much money for Shelter Box, the only relief charity so far allowed into Burma. A great day for all the players which will result in an extra edge in next years fixture.

Seniors Match vs St. Mellion
The St Enodoc team travelled to St Mellion on a blustery, cold April day with stormy showers forecast. We had been told, because major works were underway on the courses, that we would be playing the first nine holes on the ‘old ‘ course and the second nine on the ‘Nicklaus’ championship course. This sounded interesting particularly as for the second nine we would have to use buggies!! This turned out to create a challenging time after the ninth green as our trolleys had to be stored and we had to leap into our buggies for the second nine. I found the powered travel on the second nine extremely helpful to my ageing and tired legs!

In the home game some six week ago St Enodoc had only come out ahead by 5/3 which left little margin to take to St Mellion so we had a lot to do to repeat last years draw or even the previous years overall victory. Captain Bob from St Mellion led us off in fine style into a stiff head wind which made the first few holes challenging. We had an enjoyable time and it was interesting to compare the two courses—the ‘old’ on the top of the hills and the ‘Nicklaus’ in the valleys. Luckily the weather held and we all got round in dry weather.

We were well entertained in the evening and Captain Bob was generous in his welcome after supper. Clearly from the level of noise and laughter we all enjoyed our visit to St Mellion. The nearest to the pin bottles of wine were won by John Richards for St Mellion and by Michael Maberly for St Enodoc. The result of the match at St Mellion was a win for St Enodoc by 5/3 which was an exceptionally good performance by all concerned giving an overall result of St Enodoc 10 matches and St Mellion 5 matches. Well done to everyone and my particular thanks to those who filled places in our team at the last minute.

Michael Maberly

Ladies Spring Meeting
The Ladies Spring Meeting was held on 8th April on both courses with thirteen teams of three competing on the Church and seven on the Holywell.

The weather held up despite warning of showers and all the ladies enjoyed their day with tea and light snacks provided after the round. The prize table was filled with Garden pots planted with Spring flowers which looked a picture.

The Winners on the Holywell were Janet Walton, Fran Pennington and Catherine Beagley scoring 82 points in the better ball competition, 2nd was the team led by Mary Hooper with Hester Burt and Rosemary Berrow 78 points, 3rd Pam Chapman, Freda Wherry and Margaret Croudace 76 points on count back.

Julie Smith with one of the most colourful prize tables ever!

The Church course competition was won by Celia Jarvis,Linda Derry and Sue Willmott with a runaway total of 82 points, 2nd Chris Dymond, Jane Bendall and Maxine Rich 78 points 3rd Barbara Robson, Penny Moon and Pauline Wilkins with 75 points.

Proposals for a revised management structure
Those who attended the AGM were given an explanatory leaflet outlining the Committees ideas to revise the management structure of the Club. This is a discussion document and the Committee want to gather Members opinions in order to present a final plan to be presented at next years AGM for the Members then to vote on implementation.
Below under "Extra News" you can access the .pdf file which contains those proposals. When opened it wants to be rotated through 90 degrees which you may find easier to do if you download the file and read it offline.

Thursday Roll Up 15th May
Well there was no hole-in-one this week but instead Julie and Pete Smith had the Ace up their "organisers sleeve" by doubling the Par 3 scores which gave us all something to think about! Despite the lack of sunshine more people "rolled up" this Thursday - so word is obviously getting around that the event is worth supporting and the supper is exceptionally good value. It was really great to see half a dozen non-golfers joining family and friends in the bar
after the golf for a few drinks and the meal. As one bright voice chirped up "this certainly beats cooking"!
The competition this week saw more people choosing to play on the Church course. The ever graceful Penny Moon came in the winner with a great score just one point ahead of Pat (on form) Fisher. On the Holywell Tony Mindel (who is now being very carefully monitored by the Handicap Committee) came in winner for the second week running with a truly staggering score closely followed by a certain Farmer from St Merryn who we had heard was "burning up Merlin" - well done Dave Biddick!
Thanks to Julie and Pete for being "the organisers of the day" and to the bar and catering staff who, as always, did a grand job looking after us. Next week Meg and Keith Godfrey will be running the event and the supper is Bangers and Mash or Tagliatelle with tomato sauce and parmesan - hope to see you then.

How the youngsters worked hard at County Week
Joe Cruse and Charlie Runnals, two of St.Enodocs rising stars, kicked off what was to prove a hectic County Week programme at West Cornwall golf Club on Sunday 27th April. They were competing for the prestigious Royal Cornwall Goblets trophy, a foursomes medal competition played over 18 holes. They carded a score of 63.5 placing them in first place.

Joe and Charlie receiving their Goblets

Monday would see Charlie play for the St. Enodoc A team against Bude. Unfortunately they were defeated, giving Charlie the afternoon off! As for Joe he was at Royal Porthcawl on Monday and Tuesday, practising for the Faldo series. The Faldo series starts in regions, Joe s region being the South West and Wales. 18 of the top juniors in the region, for each age group, compete off scratch over 2 rounds; Saunton and Royal Porthcawl. The top 4 after the 2 rounds progress onto a regional final. Joe shot a 79 at Saunton and an 83 at Porthcawl. Given that both courses are 6,800 yards off the back tees and the conditions were windy and showery, it is a tremendous achievement. Joe finished 10th overall, 5 shots away from qualifying.

On the Wednesday both would play in the County Individual Championship 36 hole, strokeplay qualifier. Both qualified comfortably with Joe seeded 7th. His qualifying scores of 73 and 75 earning him the Handicap trophy. Thursday would see them involved in the matchplay section of the championship. Unfortunately Joe lost on the 19th to Alan Lieske of Mullion. Charlie defeated Simon Knowles of Perranporth therefore would have to play Rob Cooke of Bude in the afternoon. Joe, having no match caddied for Charlie! Unfortunately Charlie lost to Rob 3 and 2.

Friday saw Joe play for the B team in the foursomes team competition. St. Enodoc were drawn against Mullion in the morning round. The first pairing of Steve Buse and Kevin Brenton lead from the front winning their match 6 and 5. The second pair of John Paul and Andy Jolley convincingly won their match 8 and 7 with the pairing of Shaun Beare and Joe halving their match. Onto the semi final they went in the afternoon. This time they were to play West Cornwall, a much fancied team on their own course. Some exceptional golf was played by both sides. Steve Buse and Kevin Brenton went down 2 and 1 while Shaun and Joe ran out winners at 6 and 4. Andy Jolley and John Paul held their nerve, winning their match on the 19th .

Saturday morning was final day with St. Enodoc drawn against their old rivals Trevose. Steve Buse and Kevin Brenton got Enodoc off to a great start winning their match 6 and 5. Andrew and John, undefeated for he championship followed with a 4 and 3 win. Shaun and Joe accepted a half. The B team trophy was presented to Team captain Mike Buse. In his acceptance speech he acknowledged Dave Derry and Andy Bunts contribution in getting the team through the preliminary qualifying round. He also apologised to West Cornwall but thanked them for looking after St. Enodoc past captain Malcolm Jones for the week! While most of the St Enodoc squad were celebrating in the bar, where were Charlie and Joe? Yes you’d be right…on the putting green practising.

Front row: Andy Jolley, Club Captain Kenton Williams, John Paul, B Team Captain Mike Buse.

Open Mixed Foursomes
St. Enodoc hosted the ever-popular Open Mixed Foursomes competition on Sunday 20th April. As usual, this event was fully subscribed with an entry of 148 players representing 40 golf clubs throughout the region.

Success at the Open Spring Meeting at Falmouth
The large entry of 171 for Falmouth Golf Clubs first open of the year saw competitors from all over the County. Early morning fog held up proceedings for 30 minutes thereafter everything ran like clockwork. On the course there were some great prizes up for grabs (thanks to generous sponsors Foot, Anstey, Hancock and Caffin Solicitors) with on course entertainment, nearest the pin on the 2nd, 11th and 8th holes, nearest the pin (2nd shot) on the 15th hole which was won by Martin Biddle at 5 ft 5 ins and longest drive on the 18th. Conditions were fairly good for the time of year and with the back tees being used for the first time for the year the Falmouth Course would prove a stern test for the competitors. The format was Stableford with two scores to count.

The main competition was won by Malcolm Cole, Martin Biddle and David Biddle all from St Enodoc with a fine score of 80 points, local boys James Cloke, Chris Ramsden and Richard Burton (Falmouth and Budock Vean) were 2nd with 78 points and Bill Ward, Alan Bulpin and Scott Bayton were 3rd with 78 points.
