Captains Away Day
Captain Mike Jarvis decided to have his Away Day on September 2nd at Exeter Golf Club, a James Braid course set in the grounds of a magnificent mansion and with perfect weather the 24 members including both professionals, (Nick having served his time there), had a terrific day out. The Stableford format was teams of 3 with best 2 to count so good scores were anticipated. It was good to see “Captain Hook” Charles Rayment back in golfing action after the long running saga with his hand and he also did a great job with the cards. It is more than a rumour that several members decided to make the trip, who were trying to make the Clubs Cornwall Bowl team as they were trying to catch the eye of one of the team selectors.........

Those in the money were:-
1st Malcolm Jones, Nigel Thomas and Charles Rayment 81pts
2nd Malcolm Cole, Simon Pain and Pete Smith 77pts
3rd Mark Arrowsmith, Norman Hawkey and Paul Vincent 75pts
Longest Drive: Nick Williams
Nearest the Pin: Keith Godfrey

Mark Arrowsmith, Paul Vincent and Nigel Buse, who obviously had a bad day

Viscountess Clifden Mixed Foursomes
26 pairs took part in this Mixed Foursomes event on Sunday 29th August, a sunny but very blustery day, which made an already a difficult format to score well in even harder. The event was first played in 1906 and some years later the trophies for it were lost and the only re-discovered in 2004 in the safe of a Wadebridge jeweller after his death. With the addition of a replacement perfume bottle the event was revived by then Ladies Captain Sue Foster since when it has become a much coveted prize.

There were a a very mixed bag of scores some good, some poor but at least those out of luck could blame the wind! Particular congratulations must go to Crispin Davis playing in his first St Enodoc competition.

1st Ruth East and Crispin Davis 33pts
2nd Sue Willmott and Russell Combellack 32pts
3rd Annie Hawkey and Andy Bunt 32pts
4th Ellen and Ben Collop 31pts
5th Sue and Kevin Richards 30pts

Ladies Invitation Day 24th August
44 ladies from all over the county joined 44 ladies as guests of members of St Enodoc. They played both the Church Course and the Holywell in our annual 4 Ball Better Ball invitation. Although the early starters got a bit of a drenching by 10.30 the weather had cleared to blue skies and sunshine  though with strong blustery winds. The competition produced some excellent results right across the field. Our only concern of the day was the longest drive, which was on the 18th. Suspicions were aroused when Liz Bird a County 1st team player from Newquay left a cryptic note on the board on the fairway “drug test requested”. It transpires that despite Liz thinking she had hit what she thought was the best drive she possibly could, only to find that a certain Michelle Burgess  another County player was a full 40 yards ahead of her! Thereafter just a flick from a wedge! Do not forget this is a par 5 for Ladies though the wind was behind, it was a mighty drive. Some hilarity was derived from this but the bottle of bubbly was equally well received.

My usual preamble at the prize giving was this time interrupted by the breaking news that our Prime Minister, staying in Trebetherick, up-staged us by announcing that his wife Samantha had given birth to a baby girl at Treliske Hospital (6lb 1oz); we now understand her third Christian name is to be Endellion - what a coup for Cornwall.

The prize giving finally got underway with the prize winners giving a good spread of the young and not so young!!!The only problem I had was the 2 Junior winners, who were also offered  very nice bottles of Prosecco – there will be some grateful mums – next time I must think of squash or chocolates!!

Niblick warns about crazy driving
Our esteemed professional, taking a shortcut back to the Club from the shops via Brea Road and through the course in this weeks vehicle saw a golfer about to play a shot to the Holywell 14th Green from beside the 15th Green so decided to wait. To his utter amazement the player turned the other way and fired a shot back onto the Church 3rd fairway.

Recognising the player, a one-time school teacher, he exclaimed "My good fellow what are you doing"? or words to that effect. To which the now driving instructor replied "Playing my second in the competition". "You can not do that it is out of bounds" retorted the veteran PGA man. "Why not as there are no white posts"?, to which the rules smith quickly responded "It is over a boundary hedge".

What had happened was his playing partner, the military signalman and now backbone of the Cornish Motor Trade had played first and had to rush off to the bushes with an urgent call of nature and never saw the drama. The driving instructor teed off and somehow managed to hit the ball so far right it bounced off the roof of the greenkeepers old shed and landed between the 15th Holywell Green and the tarmac road.

The errant player to the surprise of his partner, who had been looking for Bunnys provisional shot to the left of the fairway re-appeared down the road and promptly picked up his ball from the middle of the fairway and then proceeded to find his provisional ball and played on, albeit for a non-scoring 7.

Driving does not seem to be his strong suit so is this man fit for a career as a driving instructor, does he teach his pupils to drive their motor cars in a straight line or are they as erratic as his driving of a golf ball?

Course Management 4 - Machinery
Seeing all the wheeled machinery lined up in the greenkeepers shed is an impressive sight most of which is resplendent in the green and yellow John Deere colours. So why all John Deere kit? As Scott explained the service is excellent and replacement parts reasonably priced; there are great benefits with interchangeability of parts and familiarity of design so that Steve Urell can quickly and easily keep the fleet in top condition. I was impressed how after use all the equipment is pressure washed down which improves performance and makes working on them so much quicker and easier.

Steve with some equipment and workshop facilities

The array of equipment includes 6 ride-on triple green mowers, 1 greens iron, 2 tee mowers, 2 fairway mowers,, 4 utility vehicles, 1 tractor, 1 spiker, 1 top dresser, 1 digger, 6 hand mowers, 1 utility mower, 1 semi-rough cutter, 1 turf cutter, 1 Toro pro-core aerator. There is a rolling programme of replacements and at present on Scotts “wishlist” is an additional Greens iron but they cost £7,500. The benefit of having our own equipment, particualrly the digger, has been very evident in the last couple of years with some of the winter time civil engineering work, which has been undertaken like the bridge by the 4th tees and the making of the new steps onto tees all of which saves money by not having to hire in.

Mish - Mash Match
The inaugural Mish-Mash competition was held in glorious weather on Wednesday 18th August at St Enodoc. Eight teams competed fiercely, the winner being Mash (Holiday House Members) by 5 ½ to 2 ½. Most of the matches ended on the 18th green, and such was the enjoyment that a larger event is already being planned for next year; Members are urged to look carefully at next years Diary for details.

John Baxter

Ian Waters Mixed Greensomes
26 pairs entered to play on Sunday 15th August in this Mixed Greensomes event in memory of our last Secretary, who sadly died after such a short time in office. The format is the same as normal Foursomes except both players drive then select the best drive to play alternately thereafter. The day was sunny and breezy and the greens were running fast and true, as a result there were some excellent scores. At the prizegiving Captain Mike Jarvis said that he had played with a friend, a Wentworth Member, the previous day, who was convinced that our greens were quicker than his West course.

Last minute substitutes Cath and Terry Buscombe surprised themselves with an excellent score of 38 points and then had to rush away to catch up with their original plans for the day so missed what would have been a triumphant prize giving and having their photo taken! Those in the money were:-

1st Cath and Terry Buscombe 38 pts
2nd Penny Moon and Richard Matheron 37 pts
3rd Sue Floyd Jones and Tony Rounsevell 36 pts
4th Annie and Joe Cruse 36pts

No Stopping Joe Cruse in the Knockouts
Fresh from winning the Richard Beaven Foursomes knockout Joe Cruse has won the next of the knockouts The Fairfield Goblets this time with Father Bob. In their semi-final they defeated Shaun and Richard Hawken and their opponents in the final were Rob Young and Steve Cock, who had put out Mark Stevenson and Simon Pain in their semi.

With the difference in their handicaps Bob and Joe were giving Rob and Steve 9 shots but it proved anything but a formality and in fact it was a real roller coaster. Bob and Joe were 3 up after 3 holes but 2 down after 13. A Birdie at 16 put them back 1 up, but Rob and Steve won the 18th so it was off down the 19th with the prospect of giving shots on the next 3 holes. None of this materialised as they won the match on that hole.

Joe is even taller than Bob

Niblick and the Cleek
An exhausting day of 2 rounds of golf was too much for one of the players, who retired from the fray after 18 holes with a pulled leg muscle, not helped by a chorus of "Jake the Peg" from his fellow competitors at lunch. His place in the afternoon was taken by the retired psychiatric nurse, who was only out for a stroll round the Holywell with the Rabbits.

Not to feel left out of things the injured Viking decided to join the Captain in his buggy out on the course to watch the weary make their way home. They were eventually stationed above the 15th green by the pathway through to the 16th tee. By this time the St Minver Station Master was well fortified by an ample supply of alcohic bevereage, which Niblick understands was purely for medicinal purposes. To those playing it appeared that the route to the next tee was through Sharps Brewery.

Ladies Team fall at the last hurdle
A better match you could not have witnessed  on Sunday 8th August at Carlyon Bay when the Ladies team played Tehidy in the semi-final of the Gammon Cup. The weather was superb and gave all the supporters with both teams the opportunity to watch and enjoy some wonderful golf. The beautiful location on St Austell Bay was superb and the Ladies played all their matches in great spirit and determination.

Bev Vann at number one, whose current class and skill dispatched the equally experienced Rachel Philips, next out Jean Tatam also showed her gritty nature and dug deep to beat Nikki Hodge. Judy Hultgren however lost to Hillary Woods so the score and little Sue Jones had a very hard match against an in-form Gloria Sandow losing on the 16th. So the match stood at 2 all and with Sarah Sandercock after 18th all square we were awaiting the final two matches coming up the 17th. Di Dingle gave us a fright, but her opponent found trouble and as always Di held her nerve to win with an excellent final putt. Sue Roworth meantime was needed to guarantee a win as Sarah was sent up the 19th after an unbelievable three off the tee by her opponent producing a 4 with the second ball and alas it was not to be as Sarah failed to match that par on the 19th by Tehidy and Sue likewise could not match her opponents excellent 3. So the final result was 4-3 in favour of Tehidy.

It could have gone either way, the match gave us great excitement and at one time hope but it was not to be this year. The Team were a credit to the Club and I was so proud to watch their undeniable skills exhibited on an unusually fine sunny day. Thanks to all the caddies and support from Members on the course it was a joy to see to see them all.

Handstand Appeal Auction
To coincide with Captains Day the team of Tris and Julie Lang had organised a charity auction on behalf of the Handstand Appeal - the Ladies Captains charity - to provide support for young Marshall Janson. The auction was filled with some terrific lots ranging from a Manchester United signed football, pictures, nights away, copious amounts of beer, a Bath signed Rugby shirt and a Tom Watson Adams pitching Wedge.

The auction was handled very speedily and in a most professional and entertaining manner by Chartered Surveyor Malcolm Cole and the star items were one painting in a cubist style of St Enodoc Church fetched £400 and the Tom Watson wedge £360. There was also a raffle with some excellent prizes. The day was a great success and at first estimates the event raised a magnificent £4,200.

Seniors News for August
Rather a fallow month, known to some as the silly season, with grumpy old men transmogrified into grandfathers somewhat wearied by the annual invasion of grandchildren. However, the Church Stableford produced relatively high-scoring on a lovely day, the course being in prime condition. Pride of place went to Paul Godfrey in the middle of a purple patch with a highly commendable 43 points. In second place was David Ramsbottom with 39 points and a long-overdue handicap reduction, followed by the ever-consistent Mike Maberly with 38 points.
The Holywell Stableford was won by the evergreen Derek Sharpe on 40 points, Geoff Longman claiming second place on 37 with Derek Kingsbury completing the podium with 36 – whatever happened to the Junior Seniors?
The only other event of note came at the end of the month, when a group of stalwarts set forth to Perranporth to compete in The Fred Rothwell Trophy. Having come second last year the team was delighted to win the competition by six strokes from the home club, thus regaining the trophy last won in 2008. It was a sterling performance from all concerned with an average better-ball score on three-quarters handicap of 38.2 points across five pairs on a very well-presented course in a wind which was modest by Perranporth standards. To cap a lovely day Tony Mindel won the nearest-the-pin at the 16th, Paul Godfrey and Peter Commings went away with an indecent number of golf balls for being two of the four competitors who scored a two on the day, and David Elliott, aided and abetted by John Bower, won the Pairs competition – roll on next year. Unusually, Richard Parsons now has the probably unique record of winning the event in successive years with different clubs, and Mike Maberly is almost certainly the only winning competitor who habitually fails to appear in the team photograph.

Niblick is concerned at more trouble at the top
The trials and tribulations of the Officers of our Club continue for in the Farmers recently the man in charge of the Management Committee came rather unstuck on the 12th tee. He struck one of his strange “stinger” drives, which unfortunately was on a lower trajectory than (possibly) intended and struck the Cornish hedge by the public footpath.

In normal circumstances the ball would just bury itself in the undergrowth of the bank but no not this time for instead it ricocheted backwards, heading into orbit, at such speed that it cleared the yellow tee to the amazement of all four players and continued upwards over the white tee and the fence. Whether it reached the beach they dared not look but it was way out of bounds. Let us hope his judgement in relation to the affairs of the Club is less erratic.

Final Ladies League Match
Monday 23rd August saw our Ladies league team play their final match against Truro at home. The fact that we won decisively 5½ to 1½ might be due in the main to our girls supreme prowess on their home soil. As far as our standings in league Division 1 our final position will not be known until the end of October, but I do hope that I do not go down as being the first Captain to see St Enodoc Ladies be relegated to Division 2!. Hey Ho!!

Cole Rayment and White Cup 22nd August
A lovely warm and dry day was perfect for the Cole Rayment and White Cup which is a Texas Scramble for teams of 3 comprising one Junior, one Lady Member and one Gentleman Member. In total 16 teams took part on the Holywell course, many of which consisted of families with parents or grandparents partaking. Some of the younger players elected to play off the forward Blue tees and some of whom had yet to complete a full 18 hole round. There were some very good scores and those in the prizes were (Junior first) :-

1st Joe Combellack, Sue G Jones, Russell Combelleck 53.4
2nd Zak Burt, Kath Biddle, Martin Rickard 55.2
3rd Jake Sanders, Sue Roworth, Mark Jones 55.5
4th James Rickard, Celia Jarvis, Mike Jarvis 55.7

As you can see comparatively easy winners, but half a shot covered the next 3 places; all those Juniors not in the prizes each received a golf ball.

The day was a great success thanks to CRWs sponsorship with Malcolm Cole presenting the prizes, all of which gave the Juniors real match experience, encouragement and confidence and as Russell Combellack said in his victory speech the real winner was St Enodoc.

Success for Sue Roworth
Once again Sue Roworth has shown her form this time at Royal North Devon where 76 ladies from all over the West Country and as far afield as Royal Wimbledon, Oxford and the Midlands competed over two days in a medal competition for the Centenary Trophy.

The weather for both days was rain and wind but undaunted Sue produced some fine play with a 75 followed by a 76 net over the two days resulting in her winning the Centenary Trophy, a pinnacle for her I am sure, but she was also presented with Best Visitor and a second for the net prize on Thursday. Quite a couple of days on the oldest links course in England. Superb and well done from everyone in the Club.

Niblick worries about the Officers of the Club
The trials and tribulations of high office has been getting to some our leaders recently with unfortunate consequences on the course. Last Thursday our Vice Captain decided to bring a guest to play in the Thursday evening Roll-Up. Arriving early and with no one around at that time and having gone through the formalities of green fees the Headmaster showed more than a touch of impatience (should we mortals worry about next year?) so decided to start and duly played their 12 holes. On returning to the Clubhouse the place was deserted no players, no food he had got the week wrong and to make it worse his guest had the winning score.

In the Prideaux Brune and Le Marchant Cups a recent Past Captain was tending the pin for a member of the farming fraternity from the hinterland of Wadebridge, the putt was struck and the glazier was clumsy with removing the flag and with it promptly knocked the ball a further foot past the hole. Noddys mate was less than amused with the extra length of the return putt and positively apoplectic when it was announced that he had an additional 2 shot penalty for hitting the stick.

James Braid Cleek 11th August
After rain earlier in the week the Church course was in stunning condition for the second playing of the James Braid Cleek, which was presented to the Club by the James Braid Society after they played a match against St Enodoc. The society commemorates one of this countrys greatest golfers, a member of the Triumvirate along with Harry Vardon and J.H.Taylor, who dominated world golf prior to the First War. He won the Open 5 times between 1901 and 1910 and was also probably the greatest British golf course architect, and certainly the most prolific, and at the same time the Club professional at Walton Heath till his death in 1950.

36 holes of Foursomes is a daunting prospect in what is probably the hardest format of golf in which to score well but it saw 12 pairs set off in ideal conditions with not too much wind and not too hot for a long day of golf. There were some excellent scores with Steve Smith actually hitting the side of the hole on the 5th in the afternoon but it failed to fall in the hole – no matter he and John Carhart won by 3 shots with 72 Stableford points. It was terrific to see two of our younger Members Joe Cruse and Charlie Runnalls playing and coming second with 69 points and after the prizegiving they then went out and played in the 12 hole competition! Third were last years winners Kenton Williams and Nigel Thomas on 67 points.

Course Report July 2010
Church Course
Present cutting heights: Greens- 3mm, Surrounds- 8 mm, Tees- 8 mm, Fairways- 12 mm
The greens and I have been battling with the elements this month, so the monthly regime had to differ slightly; the greens received a top-dressing and were over seeded with bent. They were tined with an 8mm tine and rolled three times. Due to the over production of seed heads on greens and tees the Primo Maxx (growth regulator) programme had to increase to three times this month to counteract the ingress of weed grasses, also an increase of verti-cutting and brushing was introduced to gain a better surface.
Three conditioners were applied this month which were an iron FE, seaweed and ammonium sulphate to help with the Primo Maxx programme. This basically helps by keeping the grass plant healthy so that mechanical maintenance can be used. Fairways have been divoted twice this month and have been sprayed with a conditioner

Holywell Course
Present cutting heights: Greens- 4.5mm, Surrounds- 8mm, Tees- 11mm, Fairways- 13mm.
The greens have had an 8mm tine and were rolled. They also received an intensive verti-cutting which was followed by two conditioners being applied. Due to the bird activity around the course which indicates pests under the turf an insecticide was sprayed.

Additional Information
Christopher Whitehead is the next in line for starting his Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture. We also this month cut a new walkway on the Holywell from the 16th tee making a more direct route to the green and also steps leading up to the Ladies 18th tee on the Church have been moved and enhanced see the pic below.

Captains Day August 7th
After morning rain the day cheered up for the Mike Jarvis Captains Day with an excellent turnout of Members on both courses. The main event was a Dallas Scramble on the Church course, which had a full entry of 84 players in 21 teams, it did not get off to the best of starts for the Captain, who sounded the horn for the Shotgun start on the 9th Ladies Tee right behind one Lady Member and her Norfolk Terrier, who were less than amused. With the relatively benign conditions the scoring was excellent and there were a huge number of prizewinners.

Webcam use difficulties Vista update
My original notes have helped many people see the webcam properly the details of which I repeat below which are appropriate to Windows XP:
If you get no picture from the webcam look just above where the picture should be where there is is a message line which should read something like "This site needs ActiveX controls etc". It then says "Click here to install", do that and you should then see the camera. You will not compromise your security as it is only allowing the ActiveX programming to run on that particular webpage. Please email me if you still have problems.

Windows Vista Problems have also recently been experienced by some who have upgraded to Vista computers. This time look for the information bar above the blank picture which should say something like "This website wants to install Axis Media Control Follow the instructions which may be in two stages and take a while and even tell you that "it could not be registered on this computer" be patient as it should come up and install - voila there is the eighteenth green!

Do not give up if none of these work as it has been reported back that installing Firefox as your browser in place of Internet Explorer certainly does the trick. It is free and can be downloaded easily having put "Firefox" into Google. It is a better browser all round and it has the big advantage that it is far more secure.
