General Notices
Seniors News for February
Not much more to report than in January, but March is promising with the start of our match programme against other Clubs. The Church Stableford was won by Jim Crouch in a welcome re-appearance with 34 points from vice-captain David Elliott in second place on count-back ahead of John Baxter. The Holywell Stableford was won by Steve Clarke with 38 points, just ahead of Norman Watson, a mere two decades senior to Steve, with John Darby (another youngster) third. In the Holywell Eclectic Geoff Longman has taken the lead with two rounds to go, followed by Tyrell Sandry, Peter Meredith and David Balmford. However, in the first round of the Church Eclectic the players seemed to suffer a collective inability to hit the ball in the intended direction, as no one managed to record a score on each of the eighteen holes. Hopefully, this will be rectified in the next round.
Finally, on an administrative note, a Seniors individual Holywell handicap will in future be either his actual Holywell handicap as earned in competition or two-thirds of his Church handicap, whichever is the lower.
St Enodoc advance to CTC Final
Playing against Perranporth, yesterday 21st February, in the Semi-Final of this winters CTC competition St Enodoc comfortably advanced to the finals. Played at Trevose on a calm, dry day with Club Captain Geoff Jones, Professional Nick Williams and numerous other supporters in attendance St Enodoc members witnessed some excellent golf from both teams.
Having secured 3 and a half points to a half point in the morning foursomes the St.Enodoc team needed only 3 points from the 8 afternoon singles matches to book their place in the CTC final, to be held at Perranporth on Sunday 21st of March, when their opponents will be Trevose.
Steve Chapman led the team at number one and banked a point with a fine 6 and 5 victory over Sandy Curtain. Josh Greenaway duly followed defeating his opponent, Nick Pepper, at the 16th. Perranporths top player Rob McGregor defeated Martin Biddle on the 16th. Joe Cruses match with Conner Wilson went the distance with Joe winning on the 18th. Behind, he was not aware that Mark Justice had lost to Chris Llywelyn on the 16th and that Kristian Godfrey had lost to Chris Fleming but that Rob Cook had won his match against Dave Harris on the 15th and therefore had gained the third and vital point to win the match overall. Consequently Steve Buse and Adam Taylor agreed a half on the 14th.
Foursomes results:
Steve Chapman and Martin Biddle defeated Rob Mcgregor and Sandy Curtain
Joe Cruse and Josh Greenaway halved with Chris Fleming and Adam Taylor
Kristian Godfrey and Mark Justice defeated Chris Llywelyn and Conner Wilson
Steve Buse and Rob Cook defeated Nick Pepper and Dave Harris
In the 9th man match John Derry lost to Nathan Gilbert
Captain Steve Chapman and Drinks Manager Kenton Williams thanked all caddies and members for their support.
Make a diary note to be at Perranporth on 21st March for the Final
Lookalikes 24
Yet again Lookalike No.1, our Captain Geoff (or is it Andy Johnson?) has kept things going by supplying this lookalike of Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr. better known as “Buzz” who on 20th July 1969 followed Neil Armstrong onto the surface of the moon. Does the memory fail but did they not have a golf club and ball with them? There is more than a passing likeness with our own Chris Pomfret, star of the Bucks, a Member for many years now resident in Trelights. I bet Buzz would have benefited from some quality frozen foods on the epic voyage and no one knows more about them than Chris. Anyone for Captain Birds Eyes Fish Fingers?
Valentines Day Mixed Foursomes
On a most welcome warm and sunny day sixty Members participated in the annual Valentines Day mixed foursomes competition.
The Captain, Geoff Jones, welcoming everyone, noted that Annie and Norman Hawkey had entered into the spirit of the event by playing with a ball emblazoned with a pink heart complete with cupids arrow. Niblick advises your correspondent that the ball may also have been marked NH4AH but this is unconfirmed.
Presenting the prizes in reverse order the Captain first identified the two pairs who had won booby prizes. The Clubs lawyers have advised that the names should not be mentioned as it may breach their human rights.
1st 36 points Suzie Wilmott and Russell Combellack
2nd 34 points Janine and Tuck Clagett
3rd 33 points Penny Moon and Mike Buse
4th 32 points Judy Redman and Derek Daniels
5th 31 points Trudy and Anders Tenjso
6th 30 points Sue Jones and Tony Rounsevell
Niblick understands that alls well that ends well
Following Niblicks revelations over the lost Pound coin (see below) the tear-jerking story now has a happy ending. With considerable effort a hirsute member of our bar staff attacked the problem and after not a little bad language coupled with some damage to the screwdriver, borrowed from our smiling Professional, the grid over the drainage channel was finally prised up so enabling the coin to be retrieved.
Our Captain, a member of the Glass and Glazing Federation, then took the coin and had it embedded in resin and glass. Exactly one week after the event and after Farmers a Chartered Surveyor of this Parish and Past Captain made a formal presentation returning the prodigal coin to its rightful owner. After this emotional reunion the artist then pronounced that it has been a long time since he had won a trophy at golf. He then proceeded to use his now un-spendable pound as a coaster for his glass of House Red. Cheers!
Cash Problems in the showers come to Niblicks Ears
Dreadful scenes took place in the Mens locker rooms after a recent Thursday Farmers when a customary Pound coin match wager was being handed over by Wadebridges finest restaurateur to one of our Welsh members. The ceremony took place adjacent to the towel rack but, very surprisingly in view of his great painting skills, he of the beard and glasses promptly fumbled and dropped the coin which landed on the drainage grid and as chance would have it then fell through.
The shiny coin was plain for all to see and despite great efforts, which eventually involved the artist on hands and knees with a knife and fork it was to no avail. Players were forced to step over him as he was now obstructing the route to and from the showers and despite further concerted efforts the Golden Nuggett remained unrecoverable. He is renowned for losing golf balls despite the bird logo he crafts onto them but now it is money as well.
All was not lost for in a big field that day he had an excellent round and was 5 clear of the pack with 37 points. I suspect that when he got home and handed over his winnings the subject of his match result and its reward was quietly glossed over. Will he return with a screwdriver next to remove the grid?
Webcam use difficulties Vista update
My original notes have helped many people see the webcam properly the details of which I repeat below which are appropriate to Windows XP:
If you get no picture from the webcam look just above where the picture should be where there is is a message line which should read something like "This site needs ActiveX controls etc". It then says "Click here to install", do that and you should then see the camera. You will not compromise your security as it is only allowing the ActiveX programming to run on that particular webpage. Please email me if you still have problems.
Windows Vista Problems have also recently been experienced by some who have upgraded to Vista computers. This time look for the information bar above the blank picture which should say something like "This website wants to install Axis Media Control Follow the instructions which may be in two stages and take a while and even tell you that "it could not be registered on this computer" be patient as it should come up and install - voila there is the eighteenth green!
Do not give up if none of these work as it has been reported back that installing Firefox as your browser in place of Internet Explorer certainly does the trick. It is free and can be downloaded easily having put "Firefox" into Google. It is a better browser all round and it has the big advantage that it is far more secure.
Lady Captains Charity Coffee Morning Sucess
St Enodoc Lady Captains Charity Coffee Morning was held on Tuesday 23rd February. All who came enjoyed a fantastic morning with a record number of Ladies and Gentlemen coming along to help us raise money for this years charity the Handstand Appeal, this is a local charity helping to raise funds for Marshall Jonson who at the age of 12 months succumbed to meningitis, full details on Marshalls story can be found on http://www.handstand.org.uk/
Many people helped to make the day a success by giving up their time or by donating one of the many raffle prizes. Special thanks are due to Ian Morris who came along and expertly valued some of our treasured heirlooms and also to Kat Smith who must have manicured the nails of nearly half the ladies in Rock!
There were a variety of stalls selling anything from a jar of pickled onions to some very chic designer clothes, Guess the Weight of the Novelty Golf Ball Cake which weighed in at a whopping 4lb 5oz and the Famous St Enodoc Lady Vets Cake stall which as always proved very popular, the traditional Putting Competition was won by Pauline Wilkins taking the ladies prize and the gents prize going to Club Chairman Peter Bendall.
Thank you to everyone who helped us so to raise £1500 for the Handstand appeal.

EWGA Medal Competition 2009
Bev Vann is to be congratulated on being awarded an EWGA medal for the best four nett medal scores over the 2009 EWGA year.
She will now represent the club in the EWGA South West Regional event to be held at Chippenham Golf Club on 30th May 2010 when she will compete against one hundred other EWGA Medal winners from the South West.
Bev, a member of the Cornwall Ladies Team squad, has already made a superb start to 2010, with a gross 79 in her first EWGA Medal of the year.
New Weather Radar
We now have a new feature on the website with the addition of weather radar. It will enable you to judge, on the basis of the last three hours movements of rain bearing clouds, whether you are going to get wet or not. I have been monitoring the radar for the last three months and have certainly found it very useful to decide whether waterproofs are required. A link to it is below the Webcam. What am I talking about it never rains in Rock...............
Course Report January 2010
Church Course Report
Present cutting heights: Greens- 5 mm, Surrounds- 8 mm, Tees- 10 mm, Fairways- 15 mm.
This is the first report of the New Year which was dominated by the extreme cold weather. This saw us closed for approximately 21 days. Due to fluctuating temperatures this month we
experienced a slight outbreak of Fusarium (disease) for which was sprayed. The greens are being hand cut at present as this is a gentle form of cutting, eliminating any wheel marks that can occur during soft conditions and they have also been rolled. Greens received a folia and soil conditioner (seaweed and potassium) to aid them through this stress period. They will now have to be tined with an 8mm tine which will also aid recovery.
The tees are also being hand cut for presentation and to help surfaces. They received a folia conditioner in the form of iron. All paths have been assessed throughout the course and will be dealt with accordingly through the coming months. The 10th wooded area has been partly cleared due to fallen trees this was required to assist water flow of the river. The men’s steps on the 6th were completed this month and the ladies steps are to follow.
Holywell Course Report
Present cutting heights: Greens- 5.5mm, Surrounds- 8mm, Tees- 11mm, Fairways- 15mm.
The greens took a lot punishment this month during the cold spell so they received two applications of fungicide to combat the ongoing stresses, they were rolled and a conditioner applied. Tees were sprayed with iron to harden the grass plant. The drainage of the pond on the 6th was rectified to allow it to flow freely.
Additional Information
This month we took stock of some new equipment, a new top dresser which allows us to do more from a single load which will increase productivity and also received a new triple mower for the Church course greens.
